Sand Canyon (Japanese : サンドキャニオン) refers to a style of MAD videos and YTPMVs that use the audio track having no specific title for Sand Canyon 1, one of the stages in Nintendo’s 1997 game Kirby’s Dream Land 3.^[1] This song is written by Jun Ishikawa, the main composer of Kirby series.

Simillar to Gourmet Race, Sky High and Masked DeDeDe, this audio track has been a popular music resource for online parodies through YouTube and the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga (NND).

Origin

According to Nico Nico Pedia^[2], an internet encyclopedia for NND, this song began to be used in MADs on NND in the second half in 2008. The earliest MAD video reusing this song was posted to NND on September 27th, 2008, titled “Shu-by of the Star 3 : Heat Canyon” (【松岡修造】星岡ビィ造３　ヒートキャニオン【星のカービィ】).^[3] This was also a derivative of Shuzo Matsuoka phenomenon.

The video that led to a substantial increase in popularity of the series was“Anime-developed country Nippon Pon” (Japanese : アニメ先進国ニッポンッポン) posted to NND on October 13th, 2008.^[4] This video features the Japanese anime Lucky Star.^[5]

Spread

Many MAD editors followed this video and began to make their MAD videos with this song. They also imitated the naming style of this video. So, many videos on this series are named like “X-developed Country Y” (○○先進国××). More than 1300 videos related to this song have been posted to NND.^[6]

This MAD video series was also migrated to YouTube. With the migration, Youtube Poopers and other remixers took hold on the opportunity to use this song, giving them titles following a format of “X gets sand in his/her Y.” Some of the most popular of these include YTP staples such as Dr. Robotnik, Team Fortress 2 characters, and various rap artists.

Many videos in this series have been also uploaded to YouTube as well.^[7]

Auto-replay on NND

Many Sand Canyon series videos are created with the assumption that viewers will be using NND’s auto-replay feature to watch the video continuously. For example, the video below is a auto-replay of “Huge-serve-developed Country Toradora”(盛るぜ先進国とらドラ！)^[8] in 10 minutes:
