About

Kirby’s Gourmet Race is a mini-game from Kirby Super Star released 1996. The BGM has been proven popular over the years with number of remixes and MADS on Youtube and Nico Nico Douga.

Remixes

Gourmet Race was remixed by Nintendo themselves and reused in later Kirby games and in the Super Smash Bros. series.

An early remix was a YTMND mash up with Snoop Dogg created by Barf. This was later uploaded to Youtube in late 2006.

Another popular user remix was uploaded onto Nico Nico Douga on January 25, 2008, named Falcon * Paaawn~ [Iyaaaaahhh Mix] . This video received over 2 million views on Youtube.

These videos are called “OTO-MAD” (音MAD ,おとまっど : it means “sound mad”) in Japan.
For example, when we Japanese watch AGK x Kirby’s Gourmet Race remix video , we say “this is OTO-MAD of AGK.”
In OTO-MAD, leading factor is visual or sound source. Music is noting but secondary element.
So it’s hard to say Kirby’s Gourmet Race is Meme.

These videos are MADs, but we can call this a sub-meme of MADs (see parent entry). Since there is enough popularity and derivatives around it, we can call this a meme of some form.

I watch on OTO-MAD creators’ forum all most all OTO-MAD creators gather everyday. I’ve never seen someone who makes video inspired by music. They choice music if it’s easy to make OTO-MAD or not. Music is just a tool.
None creates OTO-MAD video in Japan is inspired by music. That’s the reason I think it’s not meme.
