Masked DeDeDe, also known as "VS. Masked DeDeDe" (Japanese: VSマスクドデデデ), refers to a style of MAD videos and YouTube Poop Music Videos (YTPMVs) that use the audio track "Masked DeDeDe Theme" (マスクド・デデデのテーマ), from the Nintendo's 2008 game Kirby Super Star Ultra, a remake for Kirby Super Star.^[1]

Simillar to Kirby's Gourmet Race, Sand Canyon and Sky High, this audio track has been a popular music resource for online parodies through YouTube and Nico Nico Douga (NND).

Origin

This song is written by Jun Ishikawa, the main composer of Kirby series.

The first instance using this song on parody video remixes was one of the derivatives of Enemy Controller fad. It was uploaded to NND on November 28th, 2008.^[2]

Since this video got high rank in NND's daily ranking in that year, many MAD creators followed this video's style, started introducing this song to their works. As of January 2012, the amount of MAD videos related to this song is over 280.^[3]

YouTube

This song was introduced to YTPMVs by a famous YTPMV creator wazgul. His Team Fortress 2 themed video "Soldier vs Masked Spy" was posted to YouTube on September 17th, 2010.

The Remixes quickly spread throughout the internet with various remixes only using different charatcers with many different graphics and effects used. All with part of voice clips remixed to match the theme. Also, in some of the videos, 2 characters are used and variously colored checkerboard backgrounds are used along with many other background effects. Making the videos look great in audio and visual appearance if done well. Also, a screensaver was made for the Soldier VS. Masked Spy Video.^[4]

Following wazgul's video, creators post videos with the phrasal template "(X vs.) Masked Y".^[5]
