About
The Office Fan, or Desk Fan, is a small background item in the horror game series, Five Nights at Freddy's. Due to the irrelevance of the item, it became a tool for critics of the game to use as a way to criticize the perceived "wrong" use of horror elements within the game (i.e. the use of jump-scares over more traditional horror tropes).
Origin
On October 23, 2015, YouTube channel Gametheory[1] uploaded a video detailing a theory in which the player is the killer referenced in the back story of Five Nights at Freddy's (shown below). During the video, the host feigns fear at the site of the in-game fan.
Spread
On February 5, 2015, YouTuber, Noah The Cartoonist[2], uploaded a video detailing 10 facts about The Office Fan. The video was intended as a parody of FNAF enthusiast YouTuber, Smike[3] (shown below, left). Another parody of Smike was uploaded by Leo Gomez[4] on February 19, 2015 (shown below, right).
On Feburary 15 2015, DeviantArt user Fan McFanzy[5] made an art page to ask the Office fan questions in the same vein as Tumblr Ask Blogs.
