Tasmania, Australia's favorite animal is Neil the Seal, a 600 kilo (132 pound) elephant seal who's gone viral on TikTok, inspiring the wholesome "For You" page genre known as "Neil the Seal TikTok."

The big oaf and undeniable goofball has inspired countless viral videos over the past year, peaking in virality this month as his likeness spreads outside of the Australian web, reaching Twitter / X and Instagram, just to name a few websites. Will society ever get tired of Neil the Seal content? Probably not.

Who Is Neil The Seal?

Neil the Seal is an elephant seal who's allegedly three years old. He's become somewhat of a local legend in his community where he frequently lays on the road and blocks traffic. In this sense, Neil is an attention-seeker and he's pretty good at it, generating the intrigue of the international web.

People have been documenting his lifestyle since at least 2021. However, he didn't go largely viral until this past month.

Where Is Neil The Seal From?

Neil the Seal lives on the island of Tasmania, Australia, specifically in the town of Dunalley. There's a beach there that Neil frequents and locals have become accustomed to his hang-out spots which are mostly on the rocks in the water or in their front yards.

Why Is Neil The Seal Viral On TikTok?

Neil's virality started last year, in 2022, when a few videos of him being escorted by police went viral on the Australian web. Regardless, Neil wouldn't go fully viral until this year when he blocked a Tassie woman's car preventing her from going to work.

Soon after, a TikToker named @jasonhowlett666 picked up a brunt of Neil's documentation. Howlett posted multiple videos over the past few weeks which have earned millions of views each. His and Neil's relationship is truly special, centering on their ridiculous banter.
