About

*Sigh* Go Get My Purse refers to a series of memes in which a man asks his partner for money to spend on a specific purchase, usually one that subverts expectations. First used for memes in 2016, in September 2021, the format regained popularity after a version in which the man asks for money to buy ice cream went viral. Men hugging their partners from behind while she pays is sometimes called the He Got No Money Pose.

In the following years, the image was reposted multiple times, usually as an illustration for various posts about romance and family.

On September 27th, 2016, an unknown Facebook user used the image for meme purposes, captioning it with a humorous exchange in which the man asks for money to buy drugs, to which the woman reluctantly agrees. On September 27th, multiple Facebook[2][3] users copied the post, including reposts by users Penny Parker and Devonte Jackson (repost shown below).

In the following years, the screenshot of the meme was actively circulated online, including reposts on Twitter[4] and Instagram.[5][6]

The meme did not see use as a format until March 2019, when an unknown user created the first derivative version of the format, recaptioning it with a joke about percs. On March 29th, iFunny[7] user gayfellas and an unknown Redditor[8] made the earliest found reposts of the image (shown below).

In April 2020, the format saw its first spike in popularity after a slightly recaptioned version of the meme went viral[9] in March that year. For example, on April 17th, 2020, Instagram[10] page hoodville posted a meme that received over 135,900 likes (shown below, left). In the majority of examples posted during that period, jokes about upcoming stimulus checks were made (examples shown below).

In mid-September 2021, a version of the meme in which the man asks money to buy ice cream, created by an unknown user, went viral (shown below). On September 13th, Twitter[11] user @whosalex, Facebook[12] page The Meme Aesthetic and Instagram[13] page mememanmyles made the earliest found reposts of the meme.

Following the viral spread of the post, the meme format achieved moderate popularity in September 2021.

He Got No Money Pose

The He Got No Money Pose, sometimes called the He Has No Money Hug or the She's Paying Hold, is a catchphrase and cliché used to describe the way men behave when their girlfriend is paying on behalf of them. The concept first grew popular alongside the phrase, "The universal position dudes stand in when they have no money and their girl pays for everything" in 2019. The phrase sees renewed interest when a photo of a man hugging their girlfriend from behind while at the cash register gets shared on social media.
