Official Statement from The North African Lunar Colonies

The ISS project is going along well. However, we still need research done to create artificial gravity, in order to make long term stay on the ISS possible. North Africa encourages all nations involved in the ISS project to begin research into this, and further encourages other nations to join in the ISS project.

North Africa is also opening up its southern borders to take in refugees, as the land there is more sustainable.

Haha, so apparently Finland will become the grand empire of Humanity? Awesome.

Seriously? Did you read the most recent turn?
Half of my people are frozen or dead from radiation and hunger, a quarter of my population is trapped underwater, and the other quarter are evacuating all of my territories…
Far from a grand empire if you ask me.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM WHAT'S LEFT OF THE FINNISH UNION:

It is with a heavy heart that I decree the following.  All surviving Finnish citizens on the surface are hereby ordered to evacuate all regions still in our control, we make our long journey to the formerly UK-controlled Sudan we plan to peacefully establish colonies next to North Africa.  We would also like offer North Africa our service in the construction of the ISS, as such we will share what we know of Genetic Engineering when completed in hopes of their future cooperation toward humanity's survival.
That is all.

I will release radiation treatment next turn to the globe, so everyone working on it should stop and focus on farming. Food is an issue, and one that can't be solved by moving to space, because there's no farm land in space. Are you going to import dirt from earth? How? Where will drinkable water come from? Without an atmosphere, how do you recycle a finite resource like water? I am fascinated that everyone thinks you can just move a few thousand people to the moon or mars and life goes on. You need a functioning earth to fund expensive moon and mars colonies, at least until you can terraform them into earth-like environments. When things freeze here, everyone in space will die, or stagnate. Without an unsettled green planet like Earth, space colonies aren't going to be capable of growing beyond a few thousand people. The entire surface of the moon is about 2/3rds the size of North America, and you have no water there, or arable land, or energy producing resources (besides sunlight); how big can the entire place get?

Carbon-based human living will not work on a planet with no sunlight. I don't know how to deal with that fundamental problem. We'll need to sort it out pretty quick, though, because the population is plummeting.

I could genetically engineer plants to require less sunlight in order to survive, once that tech is complete of course…other than that I'm out of options, my nation is barely limping along as is.

At least that means if I move my citizens to Malawi (best idea evar, IMO) they won't freeze, and I'll have freshwater and fertile land, because I'm trying to move everyone into Monkey Bay in Lake Malawi…If I can do this successfully, I'll be all good.

Official Statement from the USA

If anyone wants to join me in a safe paradise, go ahead!

So I am told a human brain burns around 500 calories a day, which seems high. But even so, we went from a 6 billion population to <1 billion in a year, which means even if we kept average human calorie intake at a constant we'd only need 1/6th the farmland to produce enough food to feed the entire population. If we can replace calorie intake with electricity (by using cybernetic limbs, for example, which don't require calories but rather energy, which we can still produce using nuclear reactors, oil, coal, etc.) we can reduce average healthy human calorie intake (~2,000-2,500) another 80% by making all people into brains in vats, essentially (requiring only 400-500 calories a day). Assuming another 500 million people perish in the next sixth months of nuclear winter, the human population will shrink to ~ 400-500 million (1/8th the population of 2010), and assuming we reduce calorie intake by turning human bodies into robots (about 1/5th the calorie intake in 2010), we could probably sustain the remaining population on 2.5% of the food production of 2010. This could be lowered further through cannibalism. We can probably get there using just the emerging north african farmland; I would be willing to globalize cybernetic technology for access to farmlands in that region.

Just spit-balling here.

Maybe we need to start coordinating research efforts because I'm pretty sure producing 1-2 useful farming technologies a turn, and guarding them jealously, is not going to save the human race.

Agreed, I tried doing that with Europe but everything froze over before we could get anything going. Instead of moving my people to Sudan I could move them closer to Singapore (I was originally thinking Myanmar) in order to better coordinate with your research efforts, the land isn't as fertile as North Africa's but maybe my efforts would be better if focused toward researching rather than agriculture.

We are willing to share our artificial gravity electrical generators, if you wish. the FoRce Version 3.5 should give some assistance. It sure did come in handy when we designed Version 1.0.

An official message from SLAVÉ

The Socialist Latin American- Venezuelan Empire, or SLAVÈ, will freely give any nation the secrets to Green Energy, Lunar colonization, and hydroponics (when finished), due to the recent world nuclear holocaust. Ask, and you shall receive. And even though we are communists, we regrettably drop our embargo on Singapore, because we believe every human must work together for survival in these terrible times. We desire to help other nations in need, and are accepting anyone wishing to immigrate or take refuge. The SLAVÈ is a nation almost entirely within the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, so we will do better than most surviving this new ice age. If any governments want to take refuge here, you are welcome. We are currently researching underground colonization and plan to move our populace there in the distant future. We will make this technology public domain once we are finished. We encourage other nations to freely share their technologies too.

Grazie, the Honourable Chairman of SLAVÈ

Unofficial statement: It's called "inertia", dude. Just spin the stations.

Official statement from the Republic of Sagarmatha

The people of Sagarmatha are in the process of building underground cities, not just for protection from radiation (which is still at lower levels here than many places on the globe) but in order conserve energy by reducing heat loss, and to make best usage of surface lands for farming purposes. With expanded industry in building of greenhouses as well as new developments in hydroponic agriculture, top scientists from the Republic of China have suggested that there is much in the way of open land at the newly-expanded polar icecaps that could make ideal farmland due to lower radiation levels and greater amounts of sunlight away from polluted former urban areas.

We continue to urge the remaining people of the earth to realign their lifestyles to sustainable vegetable-based diets. We suggest nations that are not land-locked as we are inspect the oceans to see the effect global cooling has had on marine life, especially seaweed, which not only creates much-needed oxygen, but may be potentially harvested for a food source. We also suggest that those possessing the means to do so would attempt to relocate a variety of flora and fauna away from arctic regions to the tropics in order to sustain biodiversity for the future of earth's ecosystems.

An official-unofficial message from the president of ANZAC

Hello, to whom are left on this earth of ours which we called home. It seems that there are no longer any ways to escape this doomed planet, therefore we must work to survive.

Anyway, I for one will be working towards the unification of all unclaimed African states. I will be willing to allow refugees to come onto my claimed land, as long as they help to maintain it. I cannot promise the providing of supplies, and it is most likely you will have to bring your own or make your own.

So, I've got to get back to cloning myself. Peace out, brah.

Statement from Germany

Well, I never expected it to end like this. I'm going to try to get the remains of the German Federation to South Africa in hopes of rebuilding Civilization there, which will be fairly difficult due to the fact that Russia Nuked almost every major North African Port and almost all of our Ports are frozen over. I've also decided to stop adding "Official" to the front of these Statements due to the fact that most of the Government is dead or on the Moon.

I'm doing a similar thing, a land passage through the middle east could work…feel free to join me in my journey.

I was thinking about taking a route through the Middle East, but I have a direct route to Italy's Ports and we could probably get to North Africa together. But, if the Italian Route fails I'd gladly go through the Middle East with Finland. Strength in numbers.

I would welcome the increased numbers, it would make the journey far less hazardous. Count me in…I will establishing a colony in Sudan however, it's closer to the Equator and may stay warmer longer.
EDIT: The land route is probably the best bet, removes the "what if" factor in case the ports are too impassible.

We could probably split Sudan, it's large enough for the remains of both of our Nations. I was originally planning to evacuate to Alexandria, but Russia's nuking of that Area has forced us to instead land at Tripoli.

Also, I don't think Scandinavia will be able to get out of this one. Nuclear Winter's setting in, and you're all trapped under a sheet of Ice. Unless you can grow your own food, you're doomed.

Okay, here's the plan…all European nations who are interested in leaving Europe (Let's face it, there's nothing left of value there) will join me in our passage through the middle east to Sudan and other Central African regions, I hear Congo is nice this time of year as well. We expect North Africa's full cooperation in this endeavor.
When (if) the ice clears the North we will return with what's left of our Navy and rescue our citizens who have been cut off by the ice.
Sound good? Okay, BREAK!

Oh, and don't forget to message Red about this.

We just got a response from Italy, they've opened up their Ports for evacuation. If we move fast we can get out of here before Italian Ports start freezing over. Hopefully, I'll see you in Africa.

Let's divide our efforts if possible, send half through the ports in Italy and half through the Middle East we'll all meet up in Central Africa.
EDIT: Awesome, see you in Africa my friend.

Agreed. You and Scandinavia can travel through the Middle East, Germany and Italy will try the Mediterranean.

Official Statement from Italy:

With us opening up our ports, we will try our best to get everyone we can out of Europe. I've messaged Red about us opening our ports as well. The sooner we get out of Europe, the better.

Summer 2017

This game is over, as there are too few people left on Earth to realistically continue the game at the 6 month per turn pace we have been going at. You have bombed the planet back to the stone age. Congratulations.
.
The next game will begin tomorrow. It will be in this thread. After I post tomorrow telling how the new game shall be played, I will then start accepting applicants.

.

Global Events
-Earth population drops further, and human beings would be put on the international endangered species list if there was a committee still in existance to support it. The polar icecap continues to spread south until it reaches the Swiss Alps. Millions flee from northern Europe, but few survive, and many die from exposure and starvation. A few small bands of survivors roam the baren German, Polish, French, and Canadian landscapes, reverting to stone age technologies and primitive snow structures to survive. Despite the proximity of the new arctic, Spain and Italy survive to accept refugees from northern Europe. Their power is supremely weakened, however, because of radical climate change, and are unable to accept large portions of these immigrants. The UK is completely frozen over, and there are few survivors. None, at any rate, still in contact with the BBC, and Charlie Brooker's Reich is forced to resign itself solely to the moon. Switzerland will grow to be the supreme, if only, space power in the world, and in the next 100 years Switzerland will be the only nation that maintains post-1970 technology. North Africa, being spared of much direct nuclear attacks due to the grace of its low population and economic prowess, is readily becoming the leading commercial power in the world. The Sahara desert is laced with small streams and shallow lakes from the melting snow, and it is predicted that in the future this desert will transform itself into a lush grassland, ready for farming and population. SLAVE and La Plata are in a similar situation, and their ability to continue maintaining large armies has kept their empires intact and capable of rebuilding. The United States continues to decay and collapse, as its states remove themselves from the union one at a time, forming their own independent governments. ANZAC continues to expand into South Africa, and its economy slowly rebuilds and develops into a major industrial power. SingSong Inc. and Lotus Flower Corp. will suffer only nominally, and will actually thrive in this future. Their distance from the north pole, combined with the relatively few or no atomic bombs dropped on them will give their nations tremendous power in the world to come. Sagarmatha and the triple alliance will not spread, develop, or repopulate the world in much of a grand way, and instead will stagnate and remain weak.

Germany may be gone, but at least what was left of it made it to North Africa.

I can't wait for the next game. Maybe Russia and America can resist becoming Nuke-happy this time around.

Well, Finland had a hell of a run…I regret nothing! Except maybe annihilating Russia when we had the chance…but oh well. Grats to Switzerland and Singapore for basically "winning" the game.

Let's do some awards! Everybody say a catagory and it's winner!

The Crazy Bastard Award goes to…The UK and DrPepperfan for painting the face of the Earth with Osaka and kidnapping Rush.

I think we won't nuke the world again this time.

We'll incendiary-bomb the crap out of everything though.

I will happily accept this award Temperance.

Now, some of you might think this game may have gone badly for the UK, what with the whole being frozen by a nuclear winter and having to evacuate to the moon, but let me just point one thing out.

Charlie Brooker is in charge of moon-broadcasts,

CHARLIE BROOKER IS IN CHARGE OF MOON=BROADCASTS.

I think I can say with some confidence that this game was an ultimate success.

Now if you don't mind me, I'm going to go read my new chapters of Azumanga Daioh of my Osaka faced moon base. Tah tah.

Pretty dang good thing we took off of Earth and built our own world here, eh, General?

General nods his head yes

And by the way,RF didn't come to Mars. We threatened to kill him if he came within 50,000 miles of us. So pretty much he drifted off into space along with his people to die.

Nooooo. I landed on Mars with 2,000 people before you threatened to kill me. So, I'm on Mars too.

I'm quite pleased with how this turned out for me. I ended up with one of the biggest, if not THE largest nation on the face of the Earth and was able to maintain it. I survived the nuclear holocaust with less direct assault than most. I started as small venezuela, and ended up with a socialist empire. I can't wait for the next game.

Piano wrote:

You starved to death in a Martian cave. Cold and alone, you contemplated your past actions with your final moments. What had come of your works? Was all the pain and suffering you had caused justified? Billions of deaths, technilogical regression, and an end to the human race as you had known it. Even your own life was now beyond your power. With these thoughts, you grinned, and lay down upon the dusty Martian soil. With your last breath you would utter two sylables: "Worth it."

(And my English professor said I would never find a way to justify using 2nd person POV)
