Started watching Fate/Stay unlimited blade works. It seemed cool, but holy fuck, those fight scenes are so awesome.

Seriously, why the fuck haven't I watched this yet.

@Dac

The show so far is about the main character mourning the death of her friend and love interest while her classmates ostracize her for not conforming with society and saying her friend deserved to die.

Yep, sounds like a deconstruction.

There is something about bears eating humans

Wonderful.

Watch Fate Zero too.

I'm about halfway through Unlimited Blade Works and I certainly agree that it's god damn gorgeous. The one gripe I have with it is that a few of the sound effects are clearly from a SFX library but I can't really complain when everything else is so beautiful.

It seems to me that Ufotable is just really good at making astonishing animation, as evident by their other work on Kara No Kyoukai (Garden of Sinners), which is probably the prettiest animation I've ever seen bar none.

And like loli says, watch Fate/Zero. It's the same amazing quality animation and fight scenes but with way better sound effects and infinitely better story, writing, and characters.

At this point, I am probably gonna watch everything about this frabchise. It seems like I have found my next obsession since Steins;Gate, though I doubt it will surpass SG as my all time favorite. I mean, the action is what hooked me.

I'm currently watching Futari wa pretty cure.

Also, I've seen Gurren lagann, Gaogaigar, Mazinkaiser, The First Dragonball, Gunbuster, Suite Precure, Evangelion, And That's all I remember. (That I don't regret watching in some capacity.)

If you're posting here looking for recommendations then Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is probably right up your alley based on what you've enjoyed.

I was looking for people to talk about things with. (Are you recommending Code Geass just because It's Mecha? Because it doesn't sound up my alley at all.)

Also, I completely forgot about Blue Comet SPT Layzner. (Just the OVAs though, I really should get to the TV Series. They cut out nearly everything that happened on Mars in the OVAs.)

I'm not really that big on mecha anime but yeah, I was recommending it based on the fact that it's got some pretty good mech fights.

If you're looking for something that just has some kick ass fights then fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works might be more to your liking.

Fate/stay night has never really interested me.

Since the last time I've logged in I've now seen The 08th MS team, 0080 war in the pocket, And 0083 stardust memory. (Liked Stardust memory the most)

Also, Just saying that Gurren lagann is probably the least original anime that I've ever seen. (Doesn't mean that it isn't good though.)

As one of my favorite anime reviewers said: "Sometimes to fully enjoy an anime you just need to turn your brain off". Gurren Lagan is a prime example of such anime.

Sure I love Gurren lagann to death, But I will fight you in the streets if you claim it to be original. (Sure it does have some original elements, No Good work is completely unoriginal, But it is pretty much an amalgamation of nearly every super robot anime that was big in japan ever. Most notably Getter robo.)

I actually see Gurren Laggan more as a parody of mecha anime than anything else. Like you said, it borrows elements and cliches from every mecha anime ever and takes things to such a ridiculous scale that it absolutely has to be a parody of the genre.

That I don't agree on. (While incredibly over the top, It seems completely sincere as a hardcore mecha fan. More like a love letter to the genre than a farce.)

Well parody doesn't necessarily imply it being a farce, it just means to deliberately exaggerate something for comedic effect. You could certainly debate whether or not it was for comic effect (I for one felt that the sheer scale of it was almost comical) but you definitely can't deny that it was very exaggerated.

On an unrelated note, I just finished Kara no Kyoukai and boy was that a good one. Without a doubt the most beautiful animation I have seen in anything ever bar none. Unfortunately though I just didn't care about the characters for some reason. That's not to say they were poorly developed or anything (quite the opposite), it's just that the characters which were developed just didn't interest me for some reason. Regardless, it still gets a place on my top ten list (probably around #2 or #3) simply for being the most god damn gorgeous thing I've seen in a while.

I guess that's true. (And I can see why you'd think that, I just don't see it that way.)

Victory Gundam has probably the least fitting opening theme for an anime ever.

Lurking through kym, ive Rarely seen something about rurouni kenshin (samurai x) which was a toonami Anime. did people forget about it?

@Tiber Septim
I've heard of it, But I was never that interested.

I've now seen Zeta gundam, (Which I really liked BTW.) I skipped Gundam ZZ, I watched CCA and F91, (I also really liked the former, The Latter was good, But it felt kind of rushed.) and I skipped Victory, So Now I'm getting into the alternate universe stuff starting with G gundam. (Of course) Really enjoying it so far. (Last episode I saw was the introduction of George De Sand and the Rose gundam.) Really like how they manage to make characters that seem so unlikable so likable in about a single episode. (I expect nothing less from the man who made one of my favorite anime and works of fiction in general, Giant robo: The animation: The day the earth stood still.)

This thread has seen better days…
Anyways, I started watching fate/zero. Its awesome, more so than fate stay ubw. Though that one still has one season left. I also am excited for Heavens feel. Its cool how this series has adaptions for it's three main heriones routes.
Anyways, now that I got my 4 Detlofs and set up my desk, my anime collection is looking really nice. I've gotten quite a few more figures since I last posted it.

>Fate/Stay Night

I really should catch up on that show, I don't have many more episodes to watch, so I should have finished it for season 2. Hope the movie will be good, it probably will, it's ufotable after all.

>One Punch Man

I have a lot more faith in the quality in this than a certain other show people were hyping me up for (*cough*akame*cough*). Dependent on who gets it, it should be good.

>YuruYuri

I have not seen the previous seasons nor do I intend to. I'm just saying that instead of making this Dogakobo should focus on a second season for a certain other comedy series based on a 4-panel manga.

>This season so far

So I get that not many people have seen Durarara (If you have though, you need to be watching it. It's even getting a broadcast dub now), but you have no excuse not to be watching Death Parade and Maria The Virgin Witch. Goddamn those two shows are way better than everything else this season (besides Durarara), and this has been my favorite season in a while.

>Next season

It's nearing that time again, so I guess I'll share what I'm going to be watching (use this to check what's on):

  • Baby Steps 2 – I appreciate that I'm the only person on the planet who watched season 1, but goddamn if it wasn't the best sports anime I've ever seen. Maybe not the best looking thing in the world (Thanks, Pierrot), and often a little slow, but it was still the most enjoyable and down to earth sports anime I've seen
  • Blood Blockade Battlefront – This reminds me so much of Baccano it's not even funny. It looks and sounds pretty much like Baccano with superpowers. But hey, as long as it has good characters as well, I'm not complaining
  • Digimon Tri – Truth be told I have never seen digimon and the only reason I'm watching it is because it has the Tsuritama artstyle. To bad it's Toei, so it won't have the Tsuritama animation too
  • Fate Stay/Night Unlimited Blade Works – See above
  • Ghost in the Shell Arise: Alternative Architecture – Truth be told I've never actually seen GiTS, so this may have to go to the backlog, but I still intend to see it
  • Gintama – I'm catching up on the other seasons (ONLY 200+ EPISODES TO GO~), and I'm enjoying iy so far. It's mostly episodic, so I might get away with not catching up on all of it.
  • Sound Euphonium – Obligatory KyoAni, even if it is just Brass band K-On. Don't screw this up.
  • Kyoukai no Rinne – Truth be told the only reason I'm watching this is because Brain's Base is animating it. I know less than nothing about this show.
  • Lupin III – I'm hoping this show is a good starting point to jump on to Lupin III. I may watch Fujiko Mine just in case.
  • Ore Monogatari – This kind of looks interesting, I don't think I'm sold on the character designs just yet but hey, I wasn't with Ping Pong either.
  • Rainy Cocoa – Hot guys
  • Shokugeki no Souma – Heard it's good, don't think it's my kind of thing, but I'm willing to try it out
  • The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki Chan – I'm not all that confident in this show's quality, and those character designs make me sad, but hey it's more Haruhi. Kind of.
  • Uta no Prince Sama – Hot guys. Still need to watch the other seasons but whatever.

There's also the Beyond the Boundary movie but I don't believe in miracles.

I tried watching Guilty Crown, but for me it was really hard to sit through. I couldn't stand the main character, Shu. 90% of his dialogue is angst and it was really grating to listen to. I stopped watching it after episode 3.

Why am I know just finding this thread?

Eh, whatever. Just got a bootleg Eva from somewhere in California.

Have another on the way from Malaysia. Will post results.

Crimeariver wrote:

Dude how the hell have you still not seen Kara no Kyoukai? That should be the number 1 priority on your list!

I saw the first two movies with my friend a few months ago, and I can't remember anything. I really need to start over.

Ghost in the Shell Arise: Alternative Architecture – Truth be told I’ve never actually seen GiTS, so this may have to go to the backlog, but I still intend to see it

Dude GiTS is definitely one you should check out. Arise is a different continuity though, so you should be able to jump right in from Border 1.

Well, Unlimited Budget Works and Fate/zero have really satisfied my action anime itch. Now I want something more mind fucky.
What Mind fuck animes do you guys recommend?
I am watching FLCL and will watch serial experiments lain right after. What else?

Also, Monster Musume is getting an anime.

Mushishi isn't exactly a mind fuck but it's certainly very unique and unlike every other anime I've ever seen. It's also one of the most relaxing anime I've ever seen.

Kara no Kyoukai could probably be considered a mind fuck since it delves into some deep philosophical topics. It's also made by Ufotable so it looks just as good if not better than Unlimited Budget Works. It's definitely my favorite anime in terms of visuals and is an absolute work of art.

Finally, if you're looking for something weird and crazy like FLCL then nichijou will probably fit the bill nicely. It probably not quite as random and crazy as FLCL but it has it's own unique brand of crazy bizarreness (an it's also pretty hilarious if you're into very physical humor).

On another note, is anyone else super excited about The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-Chan?

Ok guys, just hear me out. We are not giving enough praise to Shirobako. Anime about making anime? Big deal. Well if that's what you're thinking, you are dead wrong. I highly recommend everyone to watch it, you'll learn a thing or two about the anime industry and the laboring, tedious, yet passionate process and crew that go into making each episode. P.A. Works has done it again (omit Glasslip), this anime is one of the best in the Fall and Winter seasons.

Also Andou Tsubaki is best girl.

And Shizuka Sakaki is a close second, especially with episode 23.

Anyone else watching it? Thoughts? Opinions?

I've heard good things, watched the first 4 episodes and wasn't sold, but I've heard it gets waaaaaaaaay better afterwards. Nothing is going to top Durarara/Maria The Virgin Witch/Death Parade as anime of the season though. NOTHING.

In fact, might as well go over that now. I'd just like to make a note that my top 3 are basically interchangeable, but if you twisted my arm and forced me to choose, this would be my order:

Maria the Virgin Witch – I honestly thought that Durarara would take the cake this season, but Maria came out of nowhere and took it. This is the most well written show of the season, and never had a bad episode for the whole show so far. You need to check this out

Death Parade – This was the most popular show of the season pretty much (ignoring Tokyo Ghoul and Parasyte), and it's worth it. Another surprise for me, I didn't expect to like this nearly as much as I actually did.

Durarara x2 – The thing that stops this from winning is because of the inconsistent directing and budget. I'm actually kind of scared for durarara, it feels kind of rushed, most likely because they're trying to cram about 10 books worth of content into 3 cours, which won't turn out well

YuriKuma Arashi – This is my first Ikuhara show and it's a good one, I like the style and direction, and I can't wait to check out his other works. I feel kind of bad for it though, I often used it to creep my friends out with "look how weird anime can be", and it really doesn't do the show justice

Cute High Earth Defence Club LOVE – I love parody, and the parody in this is spot on. Super funny

Yatterman Night – while the episodic nature does grate on me a little, for what it is, it's a solid, surprisingly mellow show.

Assassination Classroom – Really funny, Koro-Sensei is my spirit animal. I love his voice too.

Tokyo Ghoul – I wasn't a huge fan of the first season, but I consider this to be a vast improvement. A few loose plot threads aside, pretty good stuff

Log Horizon – More Log Horizon. I can't really add to that

Magic Kaito 1412 – This show has officially ignited my love of mystery/detective anime. I went and watched all of Kindaichi after watching this. I may even watch Conan too. This was a really cute show

Your Lie in April – A cute little melodrama. Not usually my scene but it was pretty

The Seven Deadly Sins – Wasn't the best show I've ever seen, but it was solid. I've enjoyed following it, even if it's not my highest priority.

Comical Psychosomatic Medicine – It's not always funny, but it's fun to watch for the most part. Hey it's a short, I can't really complain.

Parasyte – Oh how the mighty have fallen. This show is not good, the writing quality took a serious nosedive after the first cour I can't even find it funny. It's just sad.

Aldnoah.Zero – PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT

Here's to a new season that won't be as good as this one in any way

Last edited Mar 20, 2015 at 05:59PM EDT

The thing about Log Horizon is… DEEN. Since they changed studios, everything is just, wrong. The first cour and arc started off very strong, then we got the kids, filler, and things just fell apart. All the important world-building and tactical war and politics were replaced by a field trip. All the important points are rushed and 5 episodes of the voyage arc left no time for the new storytelling. Goddamnit, DEEN's animation shows again, characters are drawn awfully with new designs, some good some not. It's also frequent, not just something for a background character. One of my favorite series, ruined.

So, I still advise you to watch Shirobako. Don't be turned off because of PA Works last series Glasslip, it's really great. Trust me. Trust Gary.

The Spring Season looks a lot better than the summer season though. Not going to pick up that many, most don't seem that interesting.

tfw i'll have to wait until winter for the 2nd season of akatsuki no yona

feels like ages since my last show with a medieval/feudal setting without all that highschool stuffs.

I vouch for Gary, Shirobako is a great show if your interested in getting an idea on how anime is done, along with the hardships and feelings of achievement. It has a really great cast of characters with their own individual personality and dreams to share. There is a lot of team effort and it shows the importance of every member being there to deliver.
As for myself, I took this show very personally.
Before the show I've decided to major in becoming an editor when I go to college, generally speaking working with video and sound. I want to be the one manipulating someone’s creation to their liking, it’s such a meticulous job that I actually really enjoy and tried before. I think I’d work in a production company at most, although I could go freelance with the things I plan to learn. Funny thing is that with Shirobako, it deals with how an anime production company is run and I learned to love it all. There was even an episode where they went over the process of editing a scene from the anime they were making. The show is more about animation production generally speaking, but the concept still stands for me. Although it's most likely not as nice as the show would put it, I thank Shirobako for giving me ideals that I plan for in the future.

Here’s to a new season that won’t be as good as this one in any way

I hear that kind of stuff a lot, almost every season, but I feel as if there's something nice to take away from each season. And some of the shows listed here turned out pretty well.
I stated before, but I always tend to watch everything every season offers and then decide what I want to watch and so far spring lineup looks good enough. Maybe I tend to be too optimistic, although I don't think I'll be able to keep this pattern forever though….

Goddammit that show is still amazing. Deen has not ruined the show.

Besides, I never said I wouldn't watch Shirobako, I love PA Works, just the first few episodes were kinda eh and I was going through a bit of burnout then, so I dropped it.

@SweetAndDelicious

I was joking, I'm always made to eat my words when I say that. I was just trying to make a point about how much I loved this season.

I'm joking, well, too a degree. I tend to exaggerate, but what I mean is the animation, pacing, and general delivery is poor and lackluster. It's all over the place, large spills of exposition dumps that are either too much to handle or unrelated to the more juicer plots. I don't appreciate the arcs with Minori and her friends, mainly because their results aren't as broadsweeping as Shirou's plans.

I love Log Horizon, it's take on video games and the world is so much more genuine than others (cough Sword Art Online cough). It only works when it's consistent, the first season had excellent pacing between living in a game and actually changing it. I liked the Abyssal Shaft Raid Arc a lot, William's passion really justifies and shows how the people trapped in the game are all nerds and just love gaming. Akatsuki's little arc was still fine, just that her focusing so much on becoming stronger became slightly redundant. It's also a shame best guy Krusty is still missing in action, you can read spoilers about it in the Light Novel but I won't reveal anything here. Good to see some screen time on Isaac, as well as all the other Round Table guilds. It's great to see them really changing and building the world around them.

I don't want to go too much into DEEN's animation, but I'll dig up a few examples on some reddit threads.

CG Dragons:

Floating in air:

Neck:

Head:

Uh, finger:

Face:

Okay okay, I know I'm being harsh, but only because I truly do love Log Horizon. Satelight's animation was consistent, not overly pretty, but consistent. Deen will have areas that really do impress:

but a lot of the time characters, both major and minor, will recieve the Deen treatment. It's just shows you that a lot of it is rushed, mirrored by the pacing. I thinking episodes about 16-20, give or take.

Goddamnit I still love Akatsuki.

Concerning Shirobako:

I'm not trying to force it down your throat, sorry. It's not really a slice of life, nor comedy, nor drama. It's a blend of them, but that's not the point of it. There are two main "themes".

1. Learning about the anime industry, from directing to animating to computer graphics to publishing. The giant cast is used to explore each field and the production of an anime, how each role is vital and benefits to the end result. One of them stops pumping blood, the whole system is shut down.

2. The main 5 characters. Their dream is chasing their passion of making anime, and they all really wish to create one together, an original creation that is an idea through blood and sweat. Because we've learned about the industry through each episode, it really does show how tedious their work is.

A. Production – From handling papers to calls to directing the flow, the main character Aoi is beyond stressed from the amount of work needed to keep the gears moving.
B. Animation – From drawing characters to making scenes move, Ema's job as drawing is an experience of learning and managing difficult and enduring cuts, staring at papers for hours.
C. Voice Acting – One of the more competitive fields, voice acting is very situational, requiring talent, tone, confidence, etc. Shizuka is constantly tested and applies for various roles, lending her voice for many jobs.
D. 3-D Computer Graphics – Perhaps the least explored field, CG is used as an easier, and sometimes more efficient, alternative to hand drawn animation. It's a clash between old and new, incorporating technology to the aging industry. Misa receives the least screen time, but her work from creating tires to making planes is a necessary job in the chaotic industry.
E. Scriptwriting – The things that make anime interesting, writing scenarios and directing the characters to do what they are meant to do. Making character's emotions and traits, conversations, and storytelling is a more less noted part of the process. Midori is a college student, but lands a job and begins to really learn about writing, using her passion, creativity, and curiosity to help her in her work.

I can understand how the initial episodes aren't the most exciting and engaging, but like most anime the characters begin to shape and grow. It's worth a marathon if you have the time.

Oh and the fact that Krusty, one of the strongest characters (both figuratively and literally) receives so little screen time is salt on a wound.

Yeah…
