About
#10secondi and #Palpatabreve are hashtags used by Italian social media users in protest of a judge's decision to drop sexual assault charges against a school caretaker who groped a 17-year-old student, ruling that the act wasn't sexual assault because the grope lasted under 10 seconds. The decision was made in July 2023 and inspired a TikTok trend in which users post videos groping themselves or allowing someone else to grope them for just under 10 seconds to the hashtags to showcase how long 10 seconds of groping is and protest the decision. The hashtags translate to "10 seconds" and "brief groping," respectively.
Origin
On July 10th, 2023, TikTokers began using the hashtags "#10secondi" and "#palpatabreve" in protest after an Italian judge ruled that sexual assault charges laid against a school caretaker for reaching his hand down the back of a 17-year-old student's pants and underwear and groping her would be dropped. Reportedly, the charges were dropped because the groping only lasted between 5 to 10 seconds.[1][2]
Specifically, a trend was started under the hashtags in which users grope themselves or allow someone else to grope them for 10 seconds or under to showcase just how long 10 seconds of groping really is, as well as highlight what they see as a ridiculous ruling. For example, on July 10th, TikToker[3] @paolocamilli posted a video like this, garnering over 415,000 views in nine days (shown below).

Spread
On July 10th, 2023, numerous TikTokers posted videos taking part in the brief groping trend. Some of the most popular include a post by TikToker[4] @theconiugi, garnering over 4.7 million views in nine days (shown below, left) and a post by TIkToker[5] @monnienight, garnering over 1.2 million views in the same span of time (shown below, right). The hashtag also became popularized on Instagram[6] and Twitter.[7]

The story and trend also gained virality outside of Italy. For example, on July 15th, English-speaking TikToker[8] @dylan.page reported on and explained the trend and hashtag, garnering over 4.1 million views in four days. On July 18th, Italian TikToker[9] @mariesophie posted a video about the trend, garnering over 368,000 views in a day (shown below).

@brutamerica Is it really a crime if the groping lasted less than 10 seconds? Italians are outraged after a judge ruled a 66-year-old school employee didn’t commit a crime by groping a 17-year-old student … because the groping lasted less than 10 seconds. #italy #10secondi #palpatabreve ♬ original sound – Brut.

@vicenews People in Italy have been posting videos “pretending to be groped” to speak out against a judge's ruling that cleared a 66-year-old school janitor of groping a teenage student because it lasted less than 10 seconds. #italy #italian #10secondi #palpatabreve #10seconds #10secondichallenge #speakout #speakup #womensbodies #womenoftiktok #womensrights ♬ original sound – VICE News
