Overview

Spider-Man: Far From Home is a 2019 superhero action film produced by Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. The film is the second Spider-Man film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tom Holland, Jake Gyllenhaal, Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya and more star.

History

Following the release of the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer, Sony Pictures slated the sequel for a 2019 released date.[1] Marvel later stated that the film's action would take place immediately after the events Avengers: Endgame. [2]

On January 15th, 2019, the first trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home was released. Within 24 hours, the trailer received more than 7 million views (shown below).

Reception

Trailer Reaction

Following the release of the trailer, many joked about how the film would fit into the ending of Avengers: Infinity War. Twitter[8] user @Doncates tweeted, "Spider-Man looks great for a PILE OF ASHES WTF." The tweet received more than 240 retweets and 1,300 likes in 24 hours (shown below, left).

Others joked about the title. Twitter[9] @KingImpulse tweeted, "following the naming convention of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, I hope the third one is Spider-Man: Home Alone and it’s just Peter on his own trying to protect the Avengers compound from the Sinister Six with complex, web-based traps." Within 24 hours, the tweet received more than 8,400 retweets and 28,000 likes (shown below, right).

Tony Stark Conspiracy Theories

Following the trailer's release, many fans noted the absence of Tony Stark (portrayed by Robert Downey, Jr). Online, many believed this to be an indicator that Stark dies in another 2019 Marvel film Avengers: Endgame. For example, Twitter user @marvelunsolved tweeted a clip from the film, which they used to prove that "Tony Stark Is Dead." The tweet received more than 2,000 retweets and 7,000 likes in 24 hours (shown below).

Twitter published a Moments page about the speculation.[4]



Mysterio

Fans reacted positively toward the film's villain, Mysterio (portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal). YouTuber Eugene Lee Yang tweeted,[3] "them: what generation do you belong to? me: the one old enough to have wanted Jake Gyllenhaal to play Spider-Man but young enough to see him grow up to play Mysterio." The tweet received more than 2,200 retweets and 14,000 likes in 24 hours (shown below, left). Twitter[5] user @michellememeit tweeted, "JAKE GYLLENHAAL AS MYSTERIO UM YES PLS." The tweet received more than 270 retweets and 1,300 likes in 24 hours (shown below, center). Twitter[6] user @LookTheresJosh tweeted several images of Mysterio and wrote, "The fact that Marvel Studios can turn one of Spider-Man's weirdest villains (Mysterio) into a complete bad-ass is beyond amazing, I mean look at this guy he has a frkn fish bowl on his head." The tweet received more than 1,200 retweets and 4,100 likes in 24 hours (shown below, right).

Second Trailer

A second trailer was released on May 6th, 2019, opening with Tom Holland warning watchers that the trailer will spoil the events of Avengers: Endgame. The trailer gained over 1.7 million views in less than four hours (shown below, right).


The second trailer generated large amounts of interest on Reddit. It gained over 18,000 points in less than four hours on /r/movies[10] and 23,000 points on /r/marvelstudios.[11] In the trailer, Mysterio appears to be a good guy, though in the comics he is a villain, leading to speculation as to what his role in the film will actually be.[12]
