The artist who created the image of the two aliens is currently unknown. The first known instance of the image being posted online traces back to Tumblr user^[1] mundoepsicodelico, who posted the picture on December 15th, 2015, under the "#psychedelic" hashtag, though the post did not receive much engagement.

The image was once again posted to Tumblr^[2] sometime in 2024, this time by user sacred-portal, with the added text, "when I start to quote a meme and bro says the other half." Once again, the post did not see much attention, though it indicates that the image continued to circulate on the internet in the following years.

Spread

On July 13th, 2024, TikTok^[3] @depravational used the image in a video, accompanied by the text: "When I say we locked in this what I mean." The post received over 985,600 views and 194,700 likes in less than two years.

On September 22nd, 2024, TikTok^[4] user @jophiee.e used the image for a video, which received over 2.2 million views and 499,300 likes in under two years.

The image continued to spread on the platform into 2025. On March 12th, 2025, TikToker^[5] @r8ntaros3 posted a video utilizing the image, which received over 570,500 views and 17,500 likes in about a year.

The Aliens Holding Hands meme began seeing use on X / Twitter as a popular reaction or exploitable format in early 2026.

On February 21st, 2026, X^[6] user @Iewdawg used the picture alongside a post that read, "emirates next week with a defence of tosin chalobah and gusto," which received over 83,700 views and 3,700 likes in less than two weeks.
