Applejack's Plantation is a piece of My Little Pony fan art that depicts the character Applejack as the slave owner in her plantation, while zebra characters are depicted as slaves forced to pick apples. The image became controversial when it was posted to Twitter, resulting in outraged replies and parody fan art.

Origin

On February 17th, 2020, Twitter user @RealAnonTheAnon[1] posted fan art of Applejack dressed as a southern plantation owner while overlooking a field of zebras depicted as slaves picking applies. The post gained over 530 retweets and 3,000 likes (shown below).


Spread

The post inspired backlash for its reference to American slavery. Twitter user @QuirkyCraft[2] wrote the art was "absolutely disgraceful" and added historical context about slavery (shown below, left). User @mamidulugo[3] tweeted that art like that was part of the reason they hated the My Little Pony fandom (shown below, right).


Quirky Craft @QuirkyCraft This is absolutely disgraceful . Slavery is not a joke, or an excuse for "dark-comedy". Some estimate the victims of the American slave trade to up to 200 million. Families were often split, slaves suffered physical atrocities such as whipping, and r--- was common. Others parodied the image by turning it into an exploitable. For example, user @Jargon_Scott[4] posted an exploitable crossing the image with Hotel Mario, gaining over 160 retweets and 1,100 likes (shown below, left). User Pirill posted an inversion of the comic on Derpibooru,[5] gaining over 300 upvotes (shown below, right).
