About

iOS 16 refers to a series of memes about the iPhone's updated version of the software, the iOS 16 released in September 2022, which offers changes to the lock screen, updates in Messages, Mail, and newer ways to interact with photos and videos. The new system made iPhone users create memes about the release and their experience using the new features, while users with older iPhones expressed disappointment they couldn't access the features.

Origin

On September 12th, 2022, Apple released iOS 16 update for the iPhone [1], adding the ability to edit and collaborate in Messages, use new tools in Mail, and have ways to interact with photos and video with Live Text and Visual Look Up. The software update is available for iPhone 8 and later.

Fans of the iPhone complained about the end of the support for the iPhone 7, sharing memes of their feelings on Twitter. For example, user @mn_google[2] posted a Squidward Looking Out The Window meme on September 12th, 2022, showing older phones staring at the iOS 16-updated iPhones.

Spread

In particular, social media users appreciated the background removal[3] feature for photos added in iOS 16. The feature allows users to “pick” any object from a photo and save it as a separate transparent image -- just like a background removal tool. On September 14th, TikToker @macaulay_flower[4] showed a creative way to use the feature, receiving 990,000 views in two days.

On September 15th user Calistei1 posted a tweet with a request from her father after she explained what the new feature could do. The dad requested a montage of him with his favorite dog. Her post received 68,000 likes and 3,200 retweets in one day.
