Barbz for Bernie or #BarbzForBernie is a hashtag signifying that the user is a Nicki Minaj fan who supports presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Though the hashtag began in December 2019 on Twitter, its popularity rose in March 2020 on TikTok.

Origin

On December 19th, 2019, Twitter user @iIIbeurgirl^[1] was the first to share the hashtag #barbzforbernie (shown below).

Spread

On March 30th, 2020, Twitter user @quart__z,^[2] posted four "barbz 4 bernie wallpapers" (shown below, left). That same day, Twitter user @barbz4bernie20,^[3] responded to a Donald Trump tweet with a picture of Nicki Minaj saying, "but nicki minaj would be a better president! #barbzforbernie" (shown below, right).

That day, TikToker @margotkb uploaded a video of herself driving away in a two car with the caption, "On my way to join the barbz" (shown below, left). The video gained over 61,900 likes in two days. The next day, TikToker @kriskaotic uploaded a video of themself editing a photo of Trump supporter and TikToker @nickvideos with the caption, "I hope he calls the cops on me @nickvideos #barbzforbernie #barbz #latenightkris #foryoupage #ramencult" (shown below, center). The video received over 53,100 likes in a day. That same day, TikToker @nickvideos uploaded a video denouncing "barbz" which garnered over 16,400 likes in a day (shown below, right). Paper Mag^[4] and The Daily Dot^[5] published articles on the hashtag.
