About
Black Hole-chan refers to the Moe Anthropomorphization of a black hole. While the character saw some spread alongside characters like Earth-chan in late 2017 and early 2018, the publication of the first image of a black hole caused many more artistic renditions of the character to appear online.
Origin
The earliest known picture of "Black Hole-chan" appeared on Pixiv[1] on December 4th, 2015. It was drawn by user sawasawa.
Spread
The character saw more spread alongside the rise of Earth-chan in late 2017 and early 2018. One of the most prolific artists of Black Hole-chan was BSA Apricot, who posted numerous popular pieces that winter.[3][4]
After the first image of a black hole appeared online, the character saw a surge online, appearing in more artwork across social media. Again, BSA Apricot helped the spread of the character, posting two comics to Twitter[2] and gaining 2,800 retweets and 9,500 likes (shown below).
Other popular pieces featuring the character include a post by Instagram artist taymabe, who gained over 150 likes,[5] (shown below, left) and Twitter user @unkomoreso720,[6] who gained over 4,600 retweets and 13,000 likes (shown below, right).
