About

Blepe, a portmanteau of "blue" and "Pepe," is a nickname given to the character Brett from the webcomic Boy's Club after artist Matt Furie illustrated a comic depicting Pepe the Frog as deceased in early May 2017.

Origin

On May 6th, 2017, comic book publisher by Fantagraphics released an issue of Worlds Greatest Cartoonists featuring a comic by Matt Furie in which Pepe is shown laying in a casket at his funeral. That day, several news sites reported that Furie had "killed" the character by publishing the comic, including CBR,[4] Mary Sue[5] and Mashable.[6] That day, a anonymous 4chan user submitted the comic to /pol/,[1] referring to Furie as a "fucking monster" for killing off the character. In the thread, a user posted the full comic zoomed in on the blue-colored character Brett, saying "It's the time for Blepe."

Spread

Shortly after, several pictures of Brett drawn in a similar style to Pepe were submitted to the thread, with many calling to turn more of Furie's characters into memes (shown below).

On May 7th, a post requesting additional Blepe illustrations was submitted to the /wsr/ (worksafe requests) board on 4chan, where the original poster revealed that the many were campaigning for Blepe to become the new mascot of the /bant/ (international / random) board.[8]

The popularity of Blepe clearly grows as request for Blepe illustrations to be a mascto and users campaign for it

That day, Redditor Dank_Skeletons submitted a post declaring Pepe the Frog as "dead" and advising readers to "invest in Brett/Blepe" to /r/MemeEconomy. Meanwhile, Redditor masavo000 submitted screenshots of several Blepe 4chan posts, asking "should we invest in Blepe the blue?" (shown below).[7]
