About
Bonus Meme is a segment on popular YouTube personality PewDiePie's "meme review" series in which he sometimes reviews an extra meme if there happens to be enough time in the video. The segment became popular among his fans, who have created jokes in various meme templates regarding the segment.
Origin
On December 23rd, 2017, PewDiePie posted his fourth Meme Review, which was the first to feature the "bonus meme" segment. The video gained over 5.4 million views (shown below).
Spread
After that video, PewDiePie's meme review series would sporadically feature a Bonus Meme segment. This was cause for joy among his fans, who created jokes in the /r/PewDiePieSubmissions subreddit about the segment. Many of these examples involve pointing out the "bonus meme" segment helps lengthen PewDiePie's videos to over 10 minutes, which YouTube prioritizes in rankings.[1] Some popular examples include a January 20th, 2018 post that gained 697 points (shown below, left). Another submission posted January 21st gained over 1,700 points (shown below, right).
Other jokes center around PewDiePie's editor, known as Brad, who fans joke about as having control over whether there will be a Bonus Meme segment in any given video. On April 9th, a joke about Brad "bullying" PewDiePie rather than include a Bonus Meme segment gained over 3,400 points (shown below, left). An "object labeling" joke about Brad and bonus memes posted the 14th gained over 620 points (shown below, right).
Brad is aware of the popularity of Bonus Memes and his supposed control over them, and has joked about it online. For example, on May 4th, he tweeted an Avengers: Infinity War joke in which he said he had "destroyed" bonus memes (shown below).
