About
Conservative Sunglasses Profile Pictures, also known as Trump Supporters Profile Pictures refers to a collage of social media profile pictures featuring people wearing sunglasses, usually inside a car, which is often associated with stereotypical Donald Trump supporters or Baby Boomers. The reaction image gained virality in March 2019 on Twitter / X in a post mentioning Boomers and Trump supporters' profile pictures on social media. Often using a caption above the PFPs, the image macro meme also spread to Facebook, Instagram and Reddit in a series of jokes about Boomers and conservative people sharing hateful comments or hot takes on social media and comment sections online.
Origin
The earliest known post of the "Boomer profile pictures" collection was uploaded on X[1] by user @latenightposter on March 28th, 2019, in which he added the caption "No one: Trump supporters:" to describe the people in the image (shown below), amassing more than 510 likes and 125 retweets in five years.
The following day on March 29th, Redditor u/Adelu1219 posted the meme to /r/pics[8] with the title "A Hot take from local news comment section," receiving 110 upvotes and 29 comments in roughly five years. This caption (and similar variations) was commonly used and reposted alongside the meme over the following years.
Spread
The image became a prominent source of Boomer jokes on Reddit[2] over the following months, with user u/godsafraud uploading the collage on December 17th, 2019, adding the caption, "The comment section whenever Greta Thunberg is mentioned." The post (shown below, left) amassed over 1,600 upvotes and 126 comments in five years.
On April 19th, 2019, iFunny[7] user t8fh525mfw606 posted the caption, "When you’re about to get a hot take from the local news comment section" on top of the collage as a meme, receiving only 17 smiles in five years. On April 3rd, 2020, the Facebook[3] meme page @minions4moms reposted the meme paired with the same caption (shown below, right), which received roughly 150 likes and 50 shares in four years.
Trump Supporter Backlash
On August 27th, 2020, one purported supporter of former President Donald Trump, known as @mrbillybounce on X, shared a tweet[4] that he was upset about being included in a collage of sunglasses-wearing white Trump supporters online (shown below).
His post (shown below) has since been deleted from X, but users replied to the tweet with ironic memes and jokes. For example, on August 27th, 2020, X[5] user @hishortstack photoshopped the montage replacing all profile pictures with @mrbillybounce's image (shown below, left), which received more than 6,000 likes and 300 retweets in four years. On the same day, X[6] user @hishortstack replaced the man's profile picture with the word "Nerd," garnering over 2,300 likes and 602 retweets in four years (shown below, right).
