Butthole Chart

About

Butthole Chart refers to a series of memes in which people or characters from a given franchise are placed onto a chart representing the presumed shade, looseness, smelliness and hairiness of the character's anus. The chart was first used on Reddit in October 2020 in reference to a variety of Genshin Impact characters and garnered viral spread over the following years as members of other fandoms began making their own butthole charts.

Origin

The earliest known example of a butthole chart was posted to the subreddit /r/cringetopia^[1] as early as October 26th, 2020. The butthole chart is made in reference to Genshin Impact characters and presumes the shade, tightness and hairiness of various characters' anuses. It is unclear as to how many upvotes the post gained, as /r/cringetopia is private. The post was archived to Know Your Meme^[2] by user loli_sniffer on October 26th, 2020, garnering over 16,000 views in four years.

Spread

Various versions of butthole charts gained viral spread on Reddit over the following years, with examples popping up on subreddits including /r/Animemes,^[3] /r/okbuddybaka,^[4] /r/ApexOutlands^[5] and /r/tf2^[6] between 2021 and 2023. On March 15th, 2023, a now-deleted Redditor posted a butthole chart for Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul characters to /r/okbuddychicanery^[7] that gained over 4,000 upvotes in a year (shown below).

On September 28th, 2023, X^[8] user @39daph posted a Baldur's Gate 3 butthole chart that gained over 25,000 likes in a year (shown below, left). On August 7th, 2024, X^[9] user @propaganda91 posted a butthole chart of the members of One Direction, garnering over 79,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).
