Catholic Mario or Do You Like Jesus Mario refers to a series of screenshots from Roblox of a character named "Catholic Mario," resembling a PNG of Super Mario with his hands on his hips, taken from the video game Hotel Mario. The screenshots show Catholic Mario spreading the word of God to players, and have seen use in memes including image macros over the course of the 2010s.

Origin

On June 23rd, 2015, Tumblr^[1] user robloxhellzonepremium, who posts cringe and absurd Roblox content, posted a collection of nine screenshots showing a player named "Catholic Mario" talking about Jesus Christ to other players on a server. The character is a flat PNG cutout from the 1994 Philips CD-i video game "Hotel Mario" (examples shown below).

Spread

On April 11th, 2017, Deviant Art user pechhi posted fan art based on one of the images (shown below, left). On September 28th, 2018, ShitPostBot posted a meme to Twitter^[4] using an image of Catholic Mario saying "do you like jesus," gaining over 4,600 likes and 890 retweets in two years (shown below, right).

On December 12th, 2018, Redditor mrmemer242 posted a cropped screenshot from one of the images of Mario saying "do you like jesus" to /r/gocommitdie,^[2] gaining over 900 upvotes in three years. On January 10th, 2020, Redditor Lementhemelen posted an image macro to /r/dankmemes^[3] using the same image of Mario, gaining over 13,000 upvotes in just under two years (shown below).

On September 23rd, 2021, Twitter^[5] user @RedIsADumbass posted, "chris pratt mario means this image is finally true" along with an image of Catholic Mario, referencing Pratt's casting in the Super Mario Bros. movie and his religion, gaining over 37,000 likes and 6,300 retweets in two weeks (shown below).
