Characters at the Krusty Krab refers to a series of videos depicting non-"SpongeBob SquarePants" characters visiting the Krusty Krab setting from the show. These are often characters from various other memes, particularly shitpost memes.

Origin

On January 5th, 2021, YouTube[1] user Pod 55 // play on display uploaded the earliest known example of the meme. In the video, Rick Astley visits the Krusty Krab. The video received more than 270,000 views in one year (shown below).



Spread

Krusty Krab edits gained popularity on TikTok over the following year, with many showcasing characters from various other shitpost memes. For example, on April 25th, 2021, TikTok[2] user @xink.mp4 uploaded a video in which various meme characters such as Ryback Eating Chips, TheReportOfTheWeek / Reviewbrah and Mark Zuckerberg dine in the Krusty Krab. The video received more than 6.2 million views in one year (shown below, left). On May 19th, 2021, TikTok[3] user @xquackinnit uploaded a video showing various streamers in the Krusty Krab. The video received more than 1.6 million views in one year (shown below, center). On September 9th, 2021, TikTok[4] user @memeberkualitasid uploaded a video that received more than 2.3 million views in less than one year (shown below, right).

Sometime before January 19th, 2022, a user named thewibu uploaded a video showing various anime characters, mostly from Attack on Titan, in the Krusty Krab. On January 19th, 2022, Facebook[5] user Friel Fernando reposted it to "Attack on Titan Universe (Shingeki No Kyojin)" group. The video received more than 23,000 reactions and 10,000 shares (shown below).



The meme was also popular on YouTube. On September 11th, 2021, YouTube[6] user Ya Begitulah uploaded various meme characters in the Krusty Krab such as Bing Chilling and Ainsley Harriott 'Yeheah Buoy'. The video received more than 732,000 views (shown below, left). On January 25th, 2022, YouTube[7] user Meme Zee uploaded a video showing Gordon Ramsay in the Krusty Krab trying to get the Travis Scott Burger. The video received more than 1 million views in four months (shown below, right).
