About

Christ-chan is a moe anthropomorphized character created by members of 4chan’s /pol/ (politically incorrect) board as a representation of Christian fundamentalism and evangelism.

Origin

On December 1st, 2014, an anonymous /pol/ user created a thread discussing the use of anime-inspired illustrations to convert more people to Islam (shown below, left).[1] After some discussion, another user later identified as “Chaby” decided to take the concept of using cute anime-inspired art to proselytize people into Christianity.[3] After some conceptualization, the first visual representation of Christ-chan was unveiled as a blue-eyed European woman wearing a modest blue-green dress and a cross necklace around her neck, with personality traits similar to a stereotypical Christian evangelist (shown below, right).

Spread

Christ-chan was well received by /pol/ who anointed her as board mascot, along the lines of a typical 4chan board anthropomorphism. New Christ-chan art was initially sparse; however, in February 2015, Christ-chan posts became more popular and the creation of original content increased. Christ-chan is now a regular feature of /pol/ drawthreads. As of May 21st 2015, the search term "christ-chan" produces 1,122 results in the /pol/ archive.[4]

Deus vult

Christ-chan is often paired with the phrase "deus vult", a Latin phrase meaning "God wills it" typically associated with the First Crusade.[2] Christ-chan artwork typically shows her using the phrase as an example of her strong Christian and anti-Islamic views.

As English!Ghost Stories was a gag dub (the original Japanese version was largely reviled for poor writing), I doubt Momoko being a fanatic Christian fundamentalist had less of anything to do with her original characterization and more to do with "because it's funny as all Hell."

I could be mistaken, though, as I've only seen snippets of the gag dub.

As with islamaphobia, /pol/ hates islam because of the bleeding heart liberals in sweden and other european countries bringing in boatloads of islamic immigrants & such, that the immigrants will outbreed the natives, or so I think.

Blame my poor wording if i'm incorrect.

      0
      • AlexanderRM - 8 years ago

Based on what I know /pol/, they probably hate Islam because they think hating Islam is politically incorrect (which I suppose it is, although not as strongly as, say, hating people of African descent or hating women). If suddenly liberals were to start hating on Islam in some liberal-sounding way, people on /pol/ would probably start shouting "Allahu Akbar" all the time.

"All 3 semitic religions get equal disdain."

THAT'S NOT HOW TO DO IT!
Give all the disdain to the extremists exclusively, the moderates deserve none.

As English!Ghost Stories was a gag dub (the original Japanese version was largely reviled for poor writing), I doubt Momoko being a fanatic Christian fundamentalist had less of anything to do with her original characterization and more to do with "because it's funny as all Hell."

Not really, it is common practice for people to name a particular Japanese personification of something with a appropriate prefix (e.g. ISIS-chan, Ebola-chan, Me-tan etc.).
However, in this case, it also happens to be the aforementioned pun; so that’s a bonus.

A religion-based meme that is actually fun, entertaining and even cute? Here in KYM?!
I must say I'm very pleasantly surprised.
Christ-chan has the potential to be very versatile. As long as she's not completely appropriated by either side of the extremists, we'll have a very fine and well-intentioned meme. Seriously, this one of the few gems in these past weeks. As a Catholic, I give my seal of approval.

BTW, with gem, I didn’t mean one of the “few”; I mean the “only one”. To be honest, May hasn’t been a good month for memes in this site. This is the only really good thing to come up this month so far. And I wanted to put an "is", between "this" and "one", but I think you can understand.

It's kinda funny how this meme began on a Islam Drawpic Thread and was hijacked by Christ-Chan and her followers. I agree that this is a gem, because she is a pretty looking evangelist. She is the answer to all of /pol/'s Muslim problems.

Something about Christ-chan makes me feel decidedly uncomfortable, but I'm not entirely sure why. Maybe it's because I'm an atheist, so I'm worried that she might try to purge me?
Also, the idea of Rule 34 of her just seems a little… wrong. Despite not believing in a religion, I still have the general feeling of it being holy or pure or something (Probably from living in a predominantly Catholic country), and so the thought of fapping to her seems to me like it would kind of desecrate her, or something.
With that in mind, do you reckon an atheist/agnostic/something along those lines personification will show up at some point? I imagine that I would be quite a bit more comfortable with them.

I could see that work actually,
Good Atheist-Chan is a friend to Christ-Chan, even though Christ-Chan is slightly uncomfortable around her.
I could think of Atheist-Chan looking like Christ-Chan, but wears a "atheist crucifix" ( a 'A' in the middle of a atom) and wears more modern clothes (representing how atheists proudly "live for now")
Bad Atheist-Chan, however, despises Christ-Chan, and thus belittles her and mocks her beliefs. Like GAC, she wears modern clothing, but wears a "fedora" (trilby) with a "no religion allowed" emblem (you probably know what I'm talking about: the no-smoking sign over a cross) on it, she is usually seen reading "The God Delusion" and watching Drunken Pheasants or Cult of Dusty.

(Hot damn, this sounds like this could be made into a satirical anime)

…Although even in that case I suspect some of them have beliefs largely influenced by what's politically incorrect; "if people are censoring it, it must be right" kind of mentality, like neo-reactionaries.)
