About
Coraline Choking Herself refers to a scene in the 2009 stop-motion film Coraline of the protagonist, Coraline Jones, choking herself, depicted wearing a yellow raincoat and having blue hair. The scene became a reaction image, video and GIF on Twitter / X and TikTok in 2024 and 2025. The image represented disgust, often in the face of a difficult or annoying task.
Origin
The still of Coraline choking herself first went viral on February 20th, 2015, when Tumblr[1] user greatestbastard shared it along with other screencaps from the film. The screencap included the moment's original subtitle, which read, "Groaning in disgust" (shown below). Over 10 years, the post gained over 104,900 notes.
Spread
The image became well-known in memes starting in 2024, evident in a post shared by Instagram[2] user @coraline.content on April 18th, 2024, which captioned the image, "She's so me," gaining over 404,800 likes in a year (shown below).
On September 11th, TikToker[3] @icypop10 posted a video using the scene, pairing it with the song "Blacklist" by rapper Lazer Dim 700. The video's caption read, "When I think the LOML [love of my life] texted me but it's [just] my HG [homegirl] crying and complaining about her man after I told her to leave him for the millionth time." The video received over 387,700 likes in eight months (shown below).

Also on September 11th, 2024, TikToker[4] @bximdelulu posted a meme using the same format, instead reading, "How he expects me to act when he says he has [girls]," gaining over 362,200 likes in eight months (shown below).

The memes continued heading into early 2025, evident in a post shared by Instagram[5] user @gfbewilin on May 10th, 2025, who captioned the image, "When I'm on delivered for 15 minutes so that means he's in bed with his ex and has 10 girls lined up outside his door," gaining over 246,900 likes in 11 days (shown below).
