Ongezellig

Ongezellig (sometimes called 'zellig by fans) is a Dutch web animation series created by Studio Massa and hosted on Youtube. The title is a Dutch word meaning "unsociable" or "unconfortable". The series tells the story of three adopted sisters named Maya, Coco and Mymy trying to pass their history class. Despite not being in English or Japanese, the series became disproportionately popular on 4chan's /qa/ and /co/ boards as well as spinoff boards of these such as soyjak.party ^[1].

Origin

The first episode or "deel" of Ongezellig was posted on July 20th, 2018 on Studio Massa's main channel and is currently unlisted ^[2]. It was reuploaded roughly a year later together with part 2. There are currently 6 episodes, which together constitute a 20-minute pilot. The final episode was uploaded on October 9th, 2022 ^[8].

Spread

It is often claimed that the spread of Ongezellig memes on 4chan was initially the work of a single spammer who made threads daily ^[1] but this is not known for certain. The first reference to Ongezellig on 4chan dates from a week after the first episode, referencing a new Booru ^[3] made for the series. Initially Ongezellig was mainly discussed on /pol/ due to its political themes, with references appearing only years later in /qa/ ^[4] and /s4s/ ^[5].

A page for Ongezellig was made on the Soyjak Wiki on February 6th, 2022 ^[6], and it is currently the most viewed page on the site ^[1][7] after the main page.
