About
Ongezellig (sometimes called 'zellig by fans) is a web animation series created by Studio Massa, a one-man animation studio based out of the Netherlands, and hosted on YouTube. The title translates to "uninviting" or "uncomfortable" in Dutch. The series tells the story of Maya, Coco, and Mymy, three adopted sisters trying to pass their history class. The pilot of the show was released in several parts on YouTube between 2018 and 2022. The show gained a notable following on 4chan's /qa/ and /co/ boards after 2018, as well as spinoff boards like soyak.party.
History
The Pilot is the first episode of Ongezellig and the only episode of the series. It follows Maya, the central protagonist, as she struggles to complete her history presentation, along with her two adoptive sisters Coco and Mymy.
Dutch animator Studio Massa originally posted the first part ("deel" in Dutch) of his pilot to his YouTube[1] channel on July 20th, 2018. This video was later unlisted and reuploaded alongside part 2 on July 20th, 2019, gathering over 1.5 million views in five years. The final episode was uploaded on October 9th, 2022
The show was discontinued on February 6th, 2024, with Studio Massa citing burnout and multiple failed attempts at pitching the show.[7]
Online Presence
The popularisation of Ongezellig memes is often credited to one single spammer who made daily threads on 4chan's /qa/ board, with an early example being a July 23, 2018 post on 4chan's /co/[2] board. The thread also contains the earliest known mention of and link to "Ongezellig Booru," a website[3] used to host Ongezellig fanart.
On July 26th, 2018, Ongezellig and the Booru link made an appearance on 4chan's /pol/[4] boards as well, with an anonymous user writing, ">tfw when no dutch nationalist gf"
A page for Ongezellig was made on the Soyjak Wiki on February 6th, 2022[6], and it is currently the most viewed page on the site after the main page.
Ongezellig continued to be referenced in subsequent Soyak.Party memes, as seen in a June 23rd, 2023 schizo-style edit posted by YouTuber[8] "Soyjak Party Video Archive."
A July 23rd, 2023 discussion on /r/ongezellig[5] shows non-4chan fans of the show discussing its popularity on the site, with one fan theorizing about the identity of the original /qa/ Ongezellig spammer.
