About

Damn, Y'all Broke Up? Nah, She Broke. I'm Up is a catchphrase used on TikTok to show a person's before and after "glow-up," often paired with a video of Woody from Toy Story dapping up Buzz Lightyear. The phrase was coined on Twitter in 2019 before being used to caption image macros of ironic hustle culture and Pics That Go Hard, followed by the TikTok trend in the early 2020s.

Origin

On July 3rd, 2019, Twitter[1] user AeirronCAC tweeted the first-known iteration of the catchphrase, only excluding the word "damn." In three years, his tweet received roughly seven likes and nine retweets (shown below).

Continuing into 2019, multiple Twitter[2][3] users reiterated the phrase. In 2020, tweets and memes using it as a caption became more viral. For instance, on May 17th, 2020, Twitter[4] user slimslumslam captioned a photograph of a guy laying in the backseat of a car with hundreds of $20 bills spread across his body, earning roughly 123,100 likes in two years (shown below). On May 18th, 2020, Facebook [5] user Jazmin Horton posted the same meme, earning roughly 2,900 reactions in two years.

In two years, the tweet received roughly 114,700 likes (shown below, left). This tweet inspired many Twitter users to join the trend going into the rest of the year and into 2021. For instance, on October 13th, 2020, Twitter[7] user cowboij captioned photos of herself fake levitating, earning roughly 257,800 likes in two years (shown below, right).
