Did You Pray Today? is a viral TikTok audio and catchphrase that grew popular in the year 2023. The sound is a bass-boosted remix of a 2016 song by rapper Young Thug named "Gangster Shit." The sound was popularized on TikTok as a meme towards the start of May 2023 with TikTokers using the sound to lip-sync the lyrics "Did you pray today? Did you pray today? I could dick you down on some gangster shit. I could put you down on some gangster shit."

Origin

On May 31st, 2016, Atlanta-based rap artist Young Thug released his track "Gangster Shit." The track went on to be listed third on Thug's album Trillest In The City. An audio for the song was posted to Young Thug's YouTube[1] channel on May 31st, gathering over 12 million views in six years (seen below).



On June 1st, 2016, YouTube channel Wolf Music[2] posted the earliest notable bass-boosted remix of the track, gathering over 8,000 views in six years (seen below).



The original uploader of the bass-boosted audio, TikToker @user18647354906, has over 27,000 videos listed under their sound.[3]

Spread

In the first week of May 2023, various TikTokers began using the sound with a purple-toned filter in an attempt to emulate digital aesthetics popular in the mid-2010s, when the song was originally released. An early TikTok video using the audio was posted on May 2nd, 2023 by TikToker[4] @lulrico_, gathering over 140,000 plays and 30,000 likes in ten days (seen below, left). Also on May 2nd, 2023, TikToker[5] @a.s.k_kj posted a video using the sound, gathering over 600,000 plays and 150,000 likes in ten days (seen below, right).

TikToker[6] @beaniemascot2.0 posted one such video on May 6th, 2023, gathering over 640,000 plays and 160,000 likes in a week (seen below, left). On May 7th, 2023, TikToker[7] @uhmahree posted a video lip-syncing to the lyrics, gathering over 300,000 plays and 114,000 likes in five days (seen below, right).
