About

Dog vs. Werewolf refers to an object-labeling photo series in which the dog of American entertainer Joe Rogan sits calmly next to Rogan’s werewolf statue. The dog's relaxed appearance and the werewolf's aggressive stance are typically used to contrast different subjects or the same subject in different settings.

Origin

On June 19th, 2013, Joe Rogan revealed in a since-deleted YouTube vlog that he obtained a life-size replica of the werewolf from the 1981 film An American Werewolf in London.[1] A fan of the movie[1], he commissioned special effects studio MageeFX to create the statue.[2][3] With the replica in his podcast recording studio, Rogan began taking photos next to it with podcast guests.

On November 9th, 2018, Joe Rogan posted a photo of his dog Marshall sitting next to the werewolf statue on Instagram, gaining over 330,000 likes in five months (shown below).[4]

Spread

On November 9th, 2018, Redditor Chaselepard posted an edited version of the image to the subreddit r/joerogan with labels for Marshall and the werewolf (shown below, left).[5] The image gained over 180 points in four months. On the same day, Redditor FatDiscoKid uploaded an edit of the image to r/joerogan with labels on top of the canines, receiving over 180 upvotes in the same period (shown below, right).[6]
