Overview

50501, also known as 50 Protests, 50 States 1 Day, refers to an anti-Donald Trump, Project 2025, Elon Musk and D.O.G.E. protest that occurred in the United States on February 5th, 2025. "50501" stands for "50 states, 50 protests, 1 day." The idea was for American citizens to protest at their state capitol buildings on the day. The catchphrase "Build the Resistance" and its hashtag "#buildtheresistance" trended along with the movement. The protests were largely aimed at rejecting Project 2025 and President Trump, who had seemingly begun mobilizing the Project 2025 plan within his first days in office. On February 5th, the 50501 protests made national media coverage and viral discourse ensued on social media. The 50501 movement notably started on Reddit in the /r/50501 subreddit in late January 2025.

Background

On January 24th, 2025, since-deleted Redditor^[1][2] Evolved_Fungi shared a post to the then-newly created /r/50501 subreddit. The post read in all caps, "50 PROTESTS – 50 STATES – 1 DAY – 2/5/25 – YOUR STATE CAPITOL," and outlined the dogma of the movement and protests. Over 12 days, the post received over 280 upvotes before it was deleted (shown below).

On January 26th, a "to-do" list was shared to /r/50501^[3] where Redditors discussed how to spread the word of the movement online.

Word of the protest started spreading to the subreddits of different U.S. states in late January 2025. For example, on January 29th, 2025, a poster was shared to the /r/Washington subreddit by Redditor^[4] Chappyders650, gaining over 1,100 upvotes in a week.

On January 31st, Redditor^[5] doordep shared a general poster template for others to use and share, gaining over 660 upvotes in five days (shown below).

The abovementioned poster was reposted across social media in the following days as news of the 50501 protest spread, like on February 3rd, 2025, when Instagram^[6] user @ny_indivisible and five others shared a collab post with many state posters, gaining over 11,400 likes in two days.

On February 4th, the X^[7] account @reddit_lies criticized members of /r/50501 for idolizing Luigi Mangione, gaining over 1,100 likes in a day (shown below).

Developments

February 5th, 2025 Protest

On February 5th, 2025, 50501 protestors organized outside of their state capitol buildings across the U.S. Viral videos and photos were shared en masse on social media throughout the day.

For instance, on February 5th, X^[8] user @ScooterCasterNY reposted a video from FreedomNews.TV^[9] of a 50501 protestor emotionally addressing a group of others, gaining over 17,500 views in a few hours (shown below).

X^[10] user @MorganTrau shared similar footage on the day from outside the Ohio state capitol, gaining over 26,900 views in a few hours (shown below).
