Overview
Autism Swag Summit is a competition and a community poll held on Tumblr in February and March 2023 to crown the "the true King of Autism" among fictional characters. Organized by Mod Vinegaroon, the single-elimination bracket competition featured 32 characters including Shadow the Hedgehog, Donatello, Abed Nadir, Twilight Sparkle, Link, Papyrus and Mob, among others.
Background
On February 4th, 2023, the Tumblr[1] account autismswagsummit was created. On the same day, the account announced Autism Swag Summit 2023, a bracketed competition poll between fan-favorite fictional characters on Tumblr to determine the "true King of Autism" among them (post shown below, top). On February 11th, after a period of nomination, round one of the competition featuring 32 characters divided into 16 brackets began (competition table shown below, bottom).[2]
Developments
On March 8th, 2023, the semifinals[3][4] between Donatello from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Shigeo Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100, and between Shadow the Hedgehog from Sonic the Hedgehog and Papyrus from Undertale started (shown below, left and right).
On March 10th, the finalists, Shigeo and Papyrus, were then announced,[5] with the competition table updated (shown below).
Online Reactions
The competition prompted an influx of "propaganda" memes in which Tumblr users expressed support for their favorites. Notably, the X Sweep format saw an increase in use on the platform, typically being used to root for competitors.
For example, on February 24th, 2023, Tumblr[6] user probably-not-a-rutabaga posted an X Sweep meme supporting Donatello that gained over 400 reblogs and 1,500 likes in two weeks (shown below, left). On March 10th, Tumblr[7] user chameshida posted a two-panel comic celebrating Shigeo proceeding to the semifinals that gained over 2,600 likes and reblogs in three days (shown below, right).
