Ever Heard of Dark Humor, Buddy refers to a two-panel cartoon by webcomic artist Fallenchungus in which one character threatens to sexually assault the other and then accuses them of not understanding "dark humor." Circulated since October 2023, the cartoon has been used as a reaction, exploitable and a caption meme, with the line "ever heard of dark humor buddy" also gaining virality as a catchphrase.

Origin

Prior to October 7th, 2023,^[1] webcomic artist Fallenchungus posted a two-panel cartoon in which a character tells another that he's going to sexually assault them, and after seeing their shocked reaction proceeds to accuse them of not understanding dark humor (seen below). The original cartoon was reposted by Fallenchungus on his X^[2] / Twitter account on February 26th, 2024.

The image has been used as a reaction online at least since early October 2023. On October 7th, 2023, X^[1] user @naos_diary made the earliest found post that used the image as a reaction, with the reply to a since-hidden post over 50 reposts and 1,500 likes in six months (shown below, left). On November 5th, X^[3] user @nasadotexe used the image in a quote post that gained over 120 reposts and 1,300 likes in five months (shown below, right).

On November 6th, 2023, X^[4] user @The_Chazz79 posted the earliest found edit of the cartoon, replacing the first line with a Reddit post. The edit (shown below) gained over 100 reposts and 2,700 likes in five months.

On November 13th, Fallenchungus posted a drawing of a character wearing a shirt with the line printed on it. The post (shown below, left) received over 340 reposts and 3,700 likes on X^[5] in five months. In the following months, the "Ever heard of a dark humor buddy" shirt became a running joke in the artist's community, appearing in multiple cartoons (example^[6] shown below, right).

The original cartoon saw more use as a reaction format in 2024. For example, on March 24th, 2024, X^[7] user @thefinalsage used it to react to a Berserk Horse meme, with their quote post garnering over 8,300 reposts and 114,000 likes in one month (shown below).

The meme generally takes the form of childish wordplay followed by the assurance "Relax liberal, it's called dark humor."
