Favela Trans Girl Saga refers to photographs of Brazilian influencer and streamer Sayuri Mattar made during her brief relationship with Brazilian influencer Toguro in 2020, which received viral spread as greentext stories. The greentexts have repeatedly gone viral on social media in the 2020s, eventually forming a narrative or "saga."

Origin

In 2020, transgender Brazilian streamer Sayuri Mattar and fitness and lifestyle influencer Toguro were romantically involved for a period of several months. On April 12th and 20th, 2020, Toguro uploaded photographs of himself and Mattar on a motorcycle taken at different spots of Rio de Janeiro favelas to Instagram^[1][2] and Facebook,^[3][4] where they gained over 95,000 likes and 19,000 reactions and 116,000 likes and 17,000 reactions, respectively, in four years (shown below, left and right).

Spread

Prior to the spread of the photographs in a greentext comment, they saw limited presence in memes, inspiring redraws and comparison memes. For example, on April 16th, 2020, Memedroid^[5] user Junior_ posted a meme comparing Mattar and Toguro to Poison and Hugo from Street Fighter, which received over 520 votes on the site in four years (shown below, left).

On August 10th, 2020, Redditor caioNLM posted a redraw of Toguro and Maguro as Chichiro and Modno from Danganronpa, with the image accumulating over 290 upvotes in the /r/danganronpa^[6] subreddit in four years (shown below, right).

On February 8th, 2021, an anonymous Brazilian 4chan^[7] user posted the first photo to the /sp/ board, writing a greentext expressing appreciation for living in Brazil (shown below, left). The greentext saw viral spread through reposts on Reddit and other sites in the following months.

For example, on June 18th, 2021, Redditor AspiringCucker posted a screenshot of it to the /r/greentext^[8] subreddit, where it received over 2,900 upvotes in three years. On June 21st, Redditor^[9] varsitymisc reposted the screenshot, with the post gaining over 3,700 upvotes in the subreddit in the same timeframe.

Following the viral spread of the greentext outside of 4chan, on April 18th, 2022, an anonymous 4chan user made a "sequel" post on the /pol/^[10] board. The post contained the second photograph of Toguro and Mattar on a bike (posted two weeks after the first in 2020), writing about them moving up in the world and their love staying strong. Similar to the first greentext, the post saw viral spread through screenshots reposted on other sites.^[11][12]

On December 22nd, 2022, Redditor 0verdosingOnCopium posted the two greentexts with the title "A day in the life of an average Brazilian Anon (pt. 1 + pt. 2)," with the post garnering over 9,700 upvotes in the /r/greentext^[13] subreddit in one year.

On February 26th, 2024, X^[14] / Twitter user @lobotomy_wife posted the first photograph with the caption, "telling a trans woman that the guy from the brazilian favela greentext is actually a piece of shit is like telling a kid santa isn’t real," referencing alleged psychological abuse from Toguro and his streamer collective towards Mattar. The post (shown below, left) received over 690 reposts and 21,000 likes in two days.

Later on February 26th, @lobotomy_wife then posted^[15] a photograph of Sayuri Mattar sitting on a bike with a smiling woman in the backseat, imagining the continuation of her "saga." The post received over 1,200 reposts and 14,000 likes in two days (shown below, right).

Toguro and Sayuri Abuse Controversy

In November 2021, Sayuri Mattar accused Toguro and other members of his streamer collective Mansão Maromba of psychologically abusing her during the period of their romantic involvement. According to Mattar, Toguro told her that her videos "weren't good enough," made negative comments about her looks and compared her to influencers with higher follower counts. In November 2021, EM Off and several other Brazilian websites reported on the news.^[16]

According to social media reports, despite not dating, Mattar and Toguro keep in contact and support each other.^[17]

In August 2023, Toguro was involved in a deadly road accident during which his car collided with a motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle died in the incident.^[18]
