Goonmarks is a slang term referring to bookmarks made by X / Twitter users on suggestive images and videos with the presumed purpose of masturbating to them later. The word is a portmanteau of "bookmarks" and "gooning," a slang word for prolonged mindless masturbation popularized in 2023.

Origin

On March 16th, 2023, the social media platform X^[1] / Twitter made the number of bookmarks that posts receive visible for all users.

Starting on the same day, X users made posts and replies sharing the discovery that suggestive images and videos often get a very high number of bookmarks, which many interpreted as people potentially saving the images for the purposes of masturbating to them later.

For example, on March 16th, 2023, X^[2] user @BSOLZ_ quoted a highly bookmarked video by user @mevvybear, commenting, "2,000 bookmarks is crazy 😭😭😭." The post (shown below, left) garnered over 110 likes and 4,200 reposts in 10 months.

Later that day, X^[3] user @cordell made a screenshot of their own bait post that was bookmarked over 3,100 times, commenting, "you niggas be horny asf 3k bookmarks is crazy 😭." The post (shown below, right) received over 210 reposts and 15,000 likes in 10 months.

Also on March 16th, X^[4] user @salivasisters was the first to refer to this specific type of bookmarks as "goonmarks," a portmanteau of "bookmarks" and "gooning" in reference to the slang word for prolonged mindless masturbation (post shown below).

Spread

Posts highlighting the significantly high number of bookmarks on suggestive content on X continued to appear in the following days and throughout 2023. On March 17th, 2023, X^[5] user @ExtremeBlitz__ posted a Rock's Eyebrow Raise meme about the phenomenon, which garnered over 460 reposts and 12,000 likes in 10 months (shown below).

The use of the word "goonmarks" to refer to these bookmarks gradually gained popularity in late 2023. For example, on October 21st, 2023, X^[6] user @autixcx made a post about the number of bookmarks on a video of President Joe Biden, joking that these were "goonmarks on bidens neckussy." The post (shown below, left) garnered over 260 likes in three months.

On November 21st, X user @arthoefootjob made a comment about bookmarks on his post, writing, "3 goonmarks in 1 minute. yall are sick." The comment (shown below, right) received over 410 likes on X^[7] in two months.

The slang word saw continued use in early 2024.
