The photograph was originally posted to Reddit by u/QazMunaiGaz and went viral after being reposted by X / Twitter user @doxie_gay in late February 2026 with the caption, "I'm lowkey in a financial ruin I may never recover from." The image inspired confused reactions, spreading to sites like Reddit and Instagram that month.

On February 22nd, 2026, Redditor u/QazMunaiGaz posted a photograph of a hand in a pocket, a bracelet around the subject's wrist, to the /r/OpticalIllusions[1] subreddit, garnering over 1,900 upvotes before it was removed by moderators.

Later that day, X[2] user @doxie_gay posted the same photograph, writing, "i'm lowkey in a financial ruin i may never recover from." The post gained over 26,000 likes and 6,600 reposts in a day.

The image began inspiring memes and reactions that day. One of the earliest notable examples was made that day by X[3] user @Puckmeat, quoting the post and writing, "If Kirk was built like this the shooter would have missed," referencing the death of Charlie Kirk, who was shot in the neck, garnering over 13,000 likes in a day.

Along with memes, the post inspired confused reactions by those who couldn't figure out what was being shown in the photograph.

On February 22nd, 2026, X[4] user @glindaupland quoted the post, writing, "what am i actually looking at? i’m scared," garnering over 34,000 likes in a day. About an hour later, X[5] user @kirawontmiss quoted the post, writing, "i genuinely can’t even tell what body part is this," gaining over 17,000 likes in a day.

About 30 minutes later, X[6] user @ilyasroza quoted the post, writing, "thought this was a scarily skinny and hairy neck," garnering over 355,000 likes and 13,000 reposts in a day.

Shortly after, Redditor u/PromiseMePls reposted the photo to the /r/notinteresting[7] subreddit, writing, "Look at my new bracelet," garnering over 3,000 upvotes in a day. The post was later locked to await moderator approval.

Later that day, Redditor u/FireLord_Stark posted the photo to the /r/redditgetsdrawnbadly[8] subreddit, which encourages users to draw artwork inspired by or utilizing the posted image, garnering over 860 upvotes, 55 comments and several pieces of art in the comments inspired by the photo.

That same day, the image was reposted by Instagram[9][10] users comiclonilove and jermainestip, gaining over 1,300 likes and 10,000 likes respectively in a day.
