About
Hannah Performing CPR On Legless Franz is an exploitable image macro used in a series of memes featuring an image from chapter 5 of the Attack on Titan manga of the character Hannah Diamant performing CPR on Franz Kefka despite the fact that his lower half has been torn off and he is dead. The chapter was released in July 2010 in Japan and September 2012 in English and first became the subject of memes in 2018, when the caption "Me trying to save my grades" was attached to the image. The panel became the further subject of memes over the following years and is usually used to represent someone hopelessly trying to save or fix something.
Origin
On July 16th, 2010, and September 11th, 2012, chapters five through nine of Attack on Titan were released in Japanese and English, respectively. In chapter five, Franz gets torn in half. Hannah Diamant tries to resuscitate him with CPR. In one panel, she is seen pounding on his chest to try and get his heart started, despite the fact that he is clearly dead and beyond saving.[1]
The earliest known meme to use the panel was seemingly posted by an unknown 9GAG user (presumed due to the 9GAG watermark on the meme) as early as May 23rd, 2018, when the meme was archived to Know Your Meme[2] from a now-deleted Instagram[3] account that had presumably reuploaded it.
Spread
The panel became increasingly popularized as a meme throughout the 2020s. For example, on November 21st, 2020, Redditor u/Kenny_K-Man posted a version of the meme to the subreddit /r/ShingekiNoKyojin[4] titled, "The problem with him is not the blood loss but his breathing," garnering over 5,800 upvotes in five years.
On May 16th, 2022, Redditor u/J3fc posted a Demotivational Poster meme to /r/shitposting[5] using the format, garnering over 8,400 upvotes in three years.
On October 18th, Redditor u/Redsoxdragon posted another version of the meme to /r/shitposting[6] about upvoting the fourth comment in a thread if the comment was made by a friend as a way of counteracting the common Reddit practice of downvoting the fourth comment in a chain, garnering over 53,000 upvotes in just over two years.
On February 4th, 2025, X[7] user @Mlickles posted the meme as a reaction image to a post about the video game Multiversus trending on X after it was announced that it would be shut down, with the post using the hashtag "#SaveMultiversus," garnering over 198,000 likes in two days.
