Bitch I'm Out My Coma refers to a series of videos based on Kanye West's song "Hold My Liquor" in which users illustrate the lyrics of the song with unrelated images or clips. The format gained popularity on iFunny in late March 2020, going viral on YouTube in October 2020. In early 2022, many "Bitch, I'm Back Out My Coma" TikToks were posted, wherein, creators spontaneously woke up from comas, sleep or death when prompted by something humorously important.

Origin

On June 18th, 2013, Kanye West's song "Hold My Liquor" (featuring Chief Keef) was released together with his sixth studio album Yeezus.[1] The first verse of the song begins with West singing "Bitch, I'm back out my coma," with West proceeding to sing about his reckless behavior involving car crashes, drugs and sex.

On January 29th, 2018, iFunny[2] user Wlnataco posted the earliest viral video which illustrated a lyric from the song with a still image from The Amazing World of Gumball. The post received over 4,900 smiles in three years. On August 30th, 2018, iFunny[3] user GasDrawls (apersonwhore1) posted a meme in which the song was illustrated with Doge macros, with the post accumulating over 5,200 smiles in two years (shown below, right).

The meme format achieved its modern-day form when on March 29th, 2020, iFunny[4] user Drift poster a Peter Griffin version of the meme which gained over 6,000 smiles in seven months (shown below).

Spread

Following the viral spread of Drift's post, the meme format gained notable popularity on iFunny, with multiple users contributing their edits. For example, on April 2nd, 2020, iFunny[5] user Mungo posted a version that gained over 7,500 smiles in seven months (shown below, left). A version posted by iFunny[6] user Luigihad gained over 7,400 smiles in the same period (shown below, right).

On April 5th, 2020, YouTube[7] user spe church posted a one-minute video in which he used edited photographs of himself to humorously illustrate the verse. The video gained over 17,500 views as of August 30th, 2020,[8] 390,700 views as of October 17th[9] (the period when the video first appeared in YouTube recommendations) and reached over 2.3 million views as of November 20th, 2020.

The viral popularity of the video in mid-October 2020 prompted an influx of "Hold My Liquor" edits posted on YouTube in the following month. For example, a version posted by YouTuber[9] apandah on November 13th, 2020, gained over 131,000 views in one week.

2022 TikTok Resurgence

On April 10th, 2022, TikToker[11] true.sigma posted a video that used Kanye West's "Hold My Liquor," for a Spider-man, Willem Dafoe video. Over the course of one month, the video received roughly 1.2 million plays and 174,600 likes (shown below, left). The video inspired a resurgence in the sound's usage on TikTok as multiple TikTokers started posting videos featuring themselves spontaneously waking up from comas, sleep or death when prompted by something humorously important. For instance, on April 27th, 2022, TikToker[12] dmitridriskell posted a video of him coming to life at his funeral when "caked up Latinas" arrive, earning roughly 223,100 plays and 27,200 likes in four weeks (shown below, right).

More TikToks were posted in the weeks following, like on April 29th, 2022, TikToker[13] joeyolej2 posted an iteration about ironically making fun of British people, earning roughly 1 million plays and185,800 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). On May 19th, 2022, TIkToker[14] frankiejustchillin posted one about when the goth chick from Total Drama Island shows up to his funeral, earning roughly 875,000 plays and 167,100 likes in one day (shown below, right).
