Holy Shit I Think I Joined is a subformat of Every Squad Got The memes in which a character comments on accidentally joining a group they do not wish to associate, with the format structured in the style of Robert Downey Jr.'s Comments. Spawned by an ironic Breaking Bad meme, the format gained popularity in fall 2020, achieving a larger spread in July 2021.
Origin
On September 25th, 2021, Redditor[1] Ch33seGromit posted an ironic Breaking Bad meme that combined Every Squad Got The and Robert Downey Jr.'s Comments formats. In the meme, Walter White comments that he accidentally joined a neo-nazi group consisting of 12 racist Saul Goodmans. The post received over 3,900 upvotes in six months (shown below).
Spread
On September 29th, 2020, iFunny[2] user TwinFalls posted the earliest found derivative meme, altering the caption to "Holy shit I think I accidentally joined a black metal super band." The post received over 50 smiles in 10 months (shown below).
In November 2020, Ch33seGromit's Breaking Bad meme received viral spread online through reposts. For example, on November 19th, Redditor[3] hayashi_kenta reposted the image to the /r/okbuddyretard subreddit, where it received over 15,700 upvotes in six months.
In late December 2020, an unknown user posted a history meme about Nazi war criminal Oskar Dirlewanger. The image (shown below, left) received viral spread, with reposts on 9GAG[4] and Reddit.[5] On April 7th, 2021, Redditor[6] Vodka_user3000 posted a version that gained over 2,900 upvotes in the /r/redditmoment subreddit in five months (shown below, right).
The format achieved viral popularity in late July 2020 following a viral July 20th Final Fantasy tweet[7] by user @woomy_2 that gained over 5,400 retweets and 27,700 likes in one week (shown below, left). In late July, the format has been used to comment on the Blizzard sexual harassment lawsuit. For example, on July 26th, Redditor[8] Exotik-Potato posted a meme that received over 1,700 upvotes in /r/Gamingcirclejerk in two days (shown below, right).
