About
You Guys Ever Had Gay Thoughts? Lmao refers to a spam image macro of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul character Gustavo Fring (played by Giancarlo Esposito) captioned with the catchphrase. The macro has been used as a non-sequitur reply to official social media posts by Better Call Saul since October 2021 and achieved virality on Twitter in late April 2022.
Origin
The authorship of the image (shown below), which was made in Whisper, is currently unconfirmed. The earliest found post of the image was made by Instagram[1] user gustavofringreal on June 11th, 2021, and gained 19 likes in roughly one year. The image was also posted by Tumblr[2] user cryingblogger on June 22nd, 2021, and by Twitter[3] no context gay gilliganverse (@gaycontextsaul) on August 10th, gaining 14 retweets and nearly 80 likes in nine months.
Spread
On August 10th, 2021, Twitter[4][5] user @gaydougross replied to @gaycontextsaul with the two earliest edits of the image, a recaptioned black-and-white version and a gender-swapped version, which gained over 110 likes and 30 likes, respectively, in nine months (shown below, left and right).
The image has been used as a spam reply to social media posts by Better Call Saul's official Twitter account @BetterCallSaul at least since late October 31st, 2021. For example, on that day, Twitter[6] users @JupiterIsPlane1 and @_rainshowers_ both replied to a social media post by @BetterCallSaul with the image (shown below, left and center).
The spam replies continued in the following months. For example, on February 7th, 2022, Twitter[7] user @odenhead replied to @BetterCallSaul with the macro, with the tweet gaining 12 retweets and 150 likes in three months (shown below, right).
The format did not achieve major recognition until April 30th, 2022, when Twitter[8] user @_claypot quote tweeted an April 7th post[9] by the account, writing, "look at the replies." The post received over 11,200 retweets and 96,400 likes in four days (shown below, left). The quote tweeted post contained multiple "You guys ever had gay thoughts? Lmao" replies left by users @autistkimwexler,[10] @YouveGotRedOnU_[11] and others, including a top (at that time) reply by user @odensideburns.[12]
As @_claypot's tweet went viral, the Better Call Saul gathered hundreds of spam replies with the macro. On April 30th, 2022, less than an hour after the viral tweet, Twitter[13] user @MaxGeiringer posted a video in which they scrolled down the replies. The video gained over 24,900 views, 90 retweets and 850 likes in four days (shown below).
