Hoochie Daddy Shorts is a slang term used in reference to above-the-knee men's shorts such as basketball, gym or workout shorts with drawstrings that show off a man's thighs and legs. The use of the term "hoochie daddy" implies that the shorts are worn by men seeking female attention. The term became increasingly popularized online in mid-2022.

Origin

The most prominent definition for "hoochie daddy" on Urban Dictionary[2] is defined as, "A man hoe; or a drunken, addict male who sleeps around with many different women often." The exact origin of the term "hoochie daddy shorts" is unknown, but the earliest known use of the term on Twitter[1] is an October 30th, 2011, tweet reading, "Is this Terrell Owens on VH1 with these 'hoochie daddy' shorts on? Ew!" The term is typically used in reference to above-the-knee shorts for men. For example, on March 3rd, 2022, Twitter[3] user @K_Bell8 posted an image of several pairs of basketball shorts, writing, "Bout that time," receiving multiple comments calling them "hoochie daddy shorts" (shown below).

The term became increasingly popularized throughout 2022, particularly as spring and summer approached. For example, on April 29th, 2022, Twitter[7] user @Mamacita_of2 posted, "Can i get a thread with y’all in the hoochie daddy shorts tho 👀," gaining over 11,000 likes, 1,800 retweets, 1,400 quote-tweets and a variety of responses showing examples of men in hoochie daddy shorts. On May 9th, TikToker[4] @thehomiejazz posted a video where she jokingly encourages women to catcall men wearing "hoochie daddy shorts," describing them as having "4-inch seams" and the men as having "their thighs out," gaining over 4,000 views in a week. That day, TikToker[5] @ron_doug posted a video filming a man wearing hoochie daddy shorts, reuploading the audio, gaining over 114,000 views in a week (shown below).
