I'm Not Gay Greg is a fake quote attributed to the character Rowley, as seen in a parody of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series. In the book, the character Greg pursues a romantic relationship with his friend Rowley, who rejects him. The moment has since been used as a shitpost.

Origin

On Oct 23rd, 2018, Redditor judgeggrogs published Part 10 of their Diary of a Wimpy Kid Looks Like Books series in the /r/LodedDiper^[1] subreddit. The post is a three-panel comic showing Rowley at an open door, yelling "I'm not gay, Greg!" In the following two panels, Greg watches Rowley slam the door. Greg cries to himself when left alone (shown below). The post received more than 4,900 points (100% upvoted) and 145 comments in less than three years.

Spread

Following the post's publishing, people began posting variations of the meme on the /r/LodedDiaper subreddit. For example, on January 31st, 2019, Redditor^[2] ponitail39 shared a variation of the meme in which Greg describes Rowley as the love of his life. The post received more than 600 points (99% upvoted) in less than two years (shown below, left).

Months later, on April 24th, Redditor^[3] mochasaur shared a variation in which Greg yells "I'm not Greg, gay" at an LGBTQ+ flag. The post received more than 1,000 points (100% upvoted) in less than two years (shown below, center).

On Jun 4th, moderators of r/LodedDiper banned the meme from the subreddit.^[4] The decision was made due to a decrease in the overall quality of the meme. However, users are still encouraged to make them and upload them to r/okbubbyretard.

Two days later, on June 6th, Redditor SparkstersAndEXE posted a variation of the original image, replacing Rowley's dialogue with the meme ban.^[5] The post received more than 2,500 points (100% upvoted) in less than one year (shown below, right).
