I'm Nothing Like Y'all, also known as I'm Nothing Like You Niggas, refers to an Inspirational Photo Quote that shows a goldfish jumping out of a fishbowl into another fishbowl with a top caption reading the motivational catchphrase that alludes to being unique or different. The image became well known on TikTok in 2023, mostly due to photo slideshows, referential videos and so-called Nothinglikeyallcore which references the "-core" suffix and Corecore. The meme dates back as far as 2018. The Photoshop was created in 2012 for stock photography sites.

Origin

The image of a goldfish jumping out of a fishbowl was originally created by Swedish photographer Mikael Damkier^[1] and uploaded to the stock image site Dreamstime^[2] in 2012 (shown below).

It is currently unknown who the original creator is of the "I'm Nothing Like You Niggas" meme. Reverse image search results on TinEye^[3] date as far back as 2016 (shown below). However, the link is dead, so a 2016 origin is ultimately unconfirmed. Users on Twitter / X ^[4][5] referenced the meme as early as April 2018.

Currently, the earliest discovered upload of the meme was on July 25th, 2019, to the /r/coaxedintoasnafu^[6] subreddit. However, the image is much more deep fried and moldy compared to later reposts (shown below, left). For instance, on October 7th, 2019, an object labeled iteration was shared on /r/gtaonline^[7] which was significantly less fried (shown below, right).

The most commonly shared iteration of the image (shown below, left) gained its first known post on Instagram^[8] in late December 2019. The image seemingly had an Instagram stock filter, evident in posts of the base image with the filter shared on Instagram^[9] as early as April 2016 (shown below, right).

The "I'm Nothing Like Y'all" recaption of the meme surfaced sometime in 2020. The first known upload of the image was shared by Redditor MysteriousMrB to the /r/whothefuckup^[10] subreddit on May 25th, 2020, gaining over 730 upvotes in three years (shown below).

Spread

In 2020, both versions of the meme gained usage online. For instance, on August 12th, 2020, X^[11] user @BTSsmash captioned the image, "low tier mains after winning one set," gaining over 590 likes in three years (shown below, left). On August 21st, 2021, Instagram^[12] user @idiotwaifu object labeled the bowls with gross nouns, gaining roughly 8,100 likes in two years (shown below, right).

In 2023, the images received a series of viral reposts that resulted in the meme gaining mainstream acclaim. Most notably, on April 25th, 2023, Instagram^[13] user @zuccy123456 posted the "I'm Nothing Like You Niggas" image, gaining roughly 219,700 likes in six months. On October 2nd, 2023, X^[14] user @ShitpostGate posted the meme, gaining roughly 28,700 likes in three weeks.

On October 16th, 2023, X^[15] user @DatChaosGuy posted a quote retweet that used the meme, referencing IGN's review of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 game, gaining roughly 38,200 likes in one week (shown below).

TikTok Spread

Videos using the image started to surface on TikTok as early as 2022, such as a video posted by TikToker^[16] @cocomelonenjoyer on January 1st, 2022, which received roughly 48,500 plays and 7,400 likes in one year (shown below, left). In late 2023, the meme gained increased awareness on the app, evident in a video posted by TikToker^[17] @yaboicoopdog on October 8th, 2023, which received roughly 188,700 plays and 16,700 likes in 15 days (shown below, right).
