"I'm Ugly. Wait, What?" refers to a series of four-panel ironic memes based on a fictional exchange between Stranger Things actors Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard. The format gained popularity on Instagram in early August 2019.

Origin

On August 7th, 2018, actor Finn Wolfhard appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (shown below, left).^[1] On May 23rd, 2019, actress Millie Bobby Brown appeared on the show (shown below, right).

Until August 5th, 2019, an unknown user created a four-panel meme based on the images from the episodes. The meme imagined a fictional exchange between Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard, with Brown saying that she is ugly and Wolfhard stupefying her with a non-sequitur response (non-original example shown below).

Spread

On August 5th, 2019, Instagram user notkinghill posted the earliest known meme based on the exchange, with the last panel replaced with EDP445 Smiling. ^[2] The post gained over 143,000 views and 37,500 likes within eight days.

In the following days, multiple users on Instagram and Reddit made more versions of the meme, including notable posts by professioalretard.mp4^[3] and willmakememes4food.^[4]
