Low Poly Gimmick Accounts refers to a gimmick Twitter accounts that collect images and animations of low poly objects such as animal NPCs or food from video games. The gimmick account trend started with Twitter account Low Poly Animals in October 2020.

History

Low Poly Animals

On October 23rd, Twitter[1] account low poly animals (@lowpolyanimals) was launched. On the same day, the account made its first post,[2] a GIF of a seagull from the 1993 video game Daytona USA. The post (shown below, left) received over 7,700 retweets and 33,600 likes in two months.

On the same day, the account posted[3][4][5][6] four more images of low poly animals from various video games, including Sonic Adventure 2, The Sims 4, Half-Life and Half-Life 2, with the posts accumulating between 2,400 and 8,100 likes in two months (examples shown below, right).



In the following weeks, the account made[7][8][9] multiple viral posts that surpassed 30,000 likes, including images of a dog from Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII (shown below, left), a seagull from Halo 3 (shown below, right) and a previously meme-popular image of a rat from Halo 3.



Low Poly Videogame Foods

On February 6th, 2021, Twitter[10] user @McDoggyMeaty posted an image of a 3D burger model from the 2004 video game Doom 3 (image shown below). The post received over 1,400 retweets and 10,700 likes, with @MrDoggyMeaty[11] suggesting that someone should created a gimmick account for low poly video game food. On the same day, Twitter account Low Poly Video Game Foods was created, tweeting[12] the image of the burger as its first post.



In the following months, the account posted multiple images of low poly food models from various video games. For example, on February 6th, 2021, the account posted[13] an image of a watermelon model from Garry's Mod that received over 220 retweets and 1,500 likes in two months (shown below, left). On the same day, the account tweeted[14] an image of a pizza dinner from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, with the post gaining over 1,200 retweets and 5,800 likes (shown below, center left).

The account achieved viral popularity on April 12th, 2021, when it posted[15] an image of french fries model from Cyberpunk 2077, with the tweet gaining over 9,400 retweets and 107,400 likes in five days (shown below, center right). On April 14th, the account[16] shared an image of mac and cheese dinner from The Sims 4 that gained over 28,700 retweets and 302,400 likes in three days (shown below, right).

As of December 7th, 2020, Low Poly Animals had over 112,000 followers on Twitter. As of April 14th, 2021, the account had over 154,200 followers.

As of April 14th, 2021, Low Poly Videogame Foods had over 72,700 followers.

Halo 3 Rat

Halo 3 Rat refers to a rat NPC character in the 2007 video game Halo 3. In late August 2020, ironic shitposts referencing the Halo 3 Rat gained popularity online following a viral tweet, primarily on Reddit.

Horizontally Spinning Rat

Horizontally Spinning Rat, originally known as Rats Multiplying, refers to a series of memes based on videos of 3D rat models usually set to "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Spawned in late January 2022 on iFunny with memes in which the number of rats progressively increased, the format received further spread online in Spring and Summer 2022 with videos captioned "spinning rat."
