Mario and Luigi vs. Sephiroth refers to a series of memes imagining a battle between Mario, Luigi and Sephiroth from the Final Fantasy series, largely depicting the brothers defeating Sephiroth. The memes went viral on Twitter in January 2023 following the posting of a viral "vs. thread" imagining the characters fighting.
Origin
On January 15th, 2023, Twitter[1] user @GirlSephiroth commented two side-by-side images to a longer "vs. thread" she started earlier that day, the left image showing Mario and Luigi from Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and the right image showing Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII. Vs. threads are created to imagine hypothetical battles between characters, encouraging Twitter users to quote-retweet them and explain who they think would win. The post gained over 14,000 likes and 2,900 quote retweets in three days.
Spread
The tweet went viral over the following days, inspiring Twitter users to quote retweet it and voice their opinions on the outcome of the hypothetical fight. Most users agreed that Sephiroth would be defeated by Mario and Luigi, often posting videos from the Mario & Luigi franchise of the brothers battling together to show how they would defeat Sephiroth. For example, on January 16th, Twitter[2] user @Iunarfever posted a video garnering over 36,000 likes and 5,000 retweets in two days (shown below).

That same day, Twitter[3] user @nocontextmugen posted a Mugen clip of a fight between the brothers and Sephiroth, garnering over 8,400 likes and 1,700 retweets in two days (shown below).

On January 17th, Twitter[4] user @Williord4 quote retweeted the original tweet with an original comic depicting a fight between the characters, garnering over 37,000 likes and 7,100 retweets in a day (shown below).
