McDonald's Japan Triple Beef Burger Ad, aka the "Samuraimac" ad, refers to a Japanese McDonald's commercial for of its SamuraiMac triple beef burger that heavily references one of the 2000's Touhou Project remixes, called "Marisa Stole the Precious Thing" by Japanese Doujin group IOSYS. The commercial grew popular in late August 2024 on Twitter / X, with people creating memes and fan art connecting the advertisement to Touhou Project.

Origin

On August 21st, 2024, the official McDonald's Japan Twitter / X[1] account uploaded a video advertising their new SamuraiMac triple beef burger by using IOSYS's Touhou Project video doujin "Marisa Stole the Precious Thing". The post received over 165,000 reposts and 287,000 likes in two weeks (shown below).



Spread

Starting in late August 2024, the video became the subject of discussions and memes with people comparing the advertisement to IOSYS's version. For example, on August 21st, 2024, Twitter / X[2] user @arkw0 uploaded a post criticizing the video for using the wrong font, jokingly rating it "-5,000 points." The post received more than 2,500 reposts and 17,000 likes in two weeks (shown below).

For example on August 22nd, 2024, Pixiv[3] user siw0n uploaded fan art of Alice Margatroid eating the SamuraiMac burger that received over 9,900 views in two weeks (shown below).

Marisa Stole the Precious Thing (Japanese: 魔理沙は大変なものを盗んでいきました) is a popular remix based on a piece of music from the Touhou series by the Doujin group IOSYS. Along with its flash animation music video, the remix track became quite popular within the Japanese Doujin community and even saw a minor spread to English-speaking websites, inspiring a variety of remixes, instrumental covers and MAD-style music videos.
