Me and Who? is a catchphrase used to indicate that the creator of the post desires to be a part of a dynamic demonstrated in the post. Alternatively, the catchphrase can be used by posters to ask their mutuals if their relationship fits the depicted dynamic. Originally popular as a hornyposting format in mid-2020, the catchphrase achieved mainstream popularization in January 2021.

Origin

While the exact origin of the catchphrase "me and who?" is unknown, it has been used as a part of social media posts showcasing various relationship dynamics since at least March 2020 and was initially used primarily with the purpose of hornyposting. On March 20th, 2020, Twitter[1] user @ghostgrlkat made the first such tweet to gain over 300 likes in roughly a year and a half (censored version shown below, left). On April 3rd, 2020, Twitter[2] user @ujustgotuwued made the first "me and who?" post, gaining over 9,000 likes in a year and a half (shown below, right).

Prior to January 2021, the format maintained moderate popularity on Twitter with several examples becoming viral. For example, a July 3rd, 2020, tweet[3] by @digitalrem received over 4,300 retweets and 22,200 likes in one year (shown below, left). Through the year, the format gradually became more humorous, with users utilizing a variety of imagery, including memes, as source material. For example, on September 30th, 2020, Twitter[4] user @GTE00 posted a Forehead Touch Perspective meme that received over 27,400 retweets and 131,200 likes (shown below, right).

In January 2021, following several viral versions posted in December, the format achieved a major surge in popularity on Twitter. For example, on January 7th, Twitter[5] user @deadbodyonline posted a version that received over 8,500 retweets and 38,700 likes in eight months (shown below, left). On January 13th, 2021, Twitter[6] user @wormsinabrain posted a version that gained over 19,300 retweets and 89,300 likes in the same period (shown below, right).
