Mentally Ill Girl, Cat She's Emotionally Dependent On are a series of exploitable redraw memes depicting a girl holding a cat, the girl labeled "mentally ill girl" and the cat, "cat she's emotionally dependent on." The original meme was posted to Facebook in June 2021 and gained viral spread over the following years, inspiring redraws depicting new characters with either a cat or another animal.

Origin

On June 1st, 2021, the Facebook^[1] page Dummy Thicc Goth Gf posted a rough drawing of a stick figure girl smiling and holding a cat, the girl labeled "mentally ill girl" and the cat labeled, "cat she's emotionally dependent on," garnering over 15,000 shares and 4,000 reactions in two years (shown below).

Spread

The meme gained viral spread over the following years. On June 9th, 2021, it was reposted to the /r/ADHDmemes^[2] subreddit, garnering over 500 upvotes in two years. On July 21st, Twitter^[3] user @reactjpg posted it, garnering over 1,300 likes in two years.

On August 14th, iFunny^[4] user _nope posted a redraw of the meme, garnering over 120 smiles in two years (shown below, left). On July 6th, 2022, iFunny^[5] user PsychGaming posted a redraw, originally by Twitter artist @04119__snail but since deleted, garnering over 300 smiles in a year (shown below, right). It was also posted by Facebook^[6] user Precious smol tiddy goth gf on July 7th, garnering over 1,800 shares and 1,500 reactions in the same span of time.

On September 23rd, 2022, Redditor u/Diggy2345 posted a redraw of the meme to /r/BLAHAJ^[7] about the Blahaj shark, garnering over 1,500 upvotes in a year (shown below, left). On July 13th, 2023, Redditor u/Birbo7 posted an edit of the @04119__snail redraw to /r/egg_irl^[8] replacing the plushie with a BLAHAJ, garnering over 1,700 upvotes in a month (shown below, right). On August 7th, u/DarthRevanFromKotor reposted the meme to /r/PeterExplainsTheJoke,^[9] garnering over 2,900 upvotes in a day.
