About
Mom Found the Yaoi is a redraw meme format based on the thumbnail of a YouTube video by astryuuna titled "Mom found the yaoi" and a screenshot of several thumbnails by the same Youtuber, including the titles, "yummy taiyaki," "DOWN WITH THE GOVERNMENT" and "Why I think my neighbor's dog is a government agent." The video was uploaded to YouTube in late November 2024 and was posted to Reddit that month, becoming the subject of redraws, in which the YouTuber is replaced with a character. The video's title is possibly a reference to the mom found the piss drawer meme.
Origin
On November 28th, 2024, YouTuber[1] astryuuna posted a satirical video in which she panics about her mom finding and donating her collection of yaoi and yuri manga to Goodwill, garnering over 700,000 views in two months.
On November 29th, u/twobowlingpins posted a screenshot of the video's thumbnail to /r/youngpeopleyoutube,[2] titled, "i’ve never seen more fear in someone’s eyes," garnering over 21,000 upvotes in two months. On November 30th, Tumblr[3] user mewochy posted a redraw of the thumbnail, depicting the YouTuber as Mio from _Nichijou _, garnering over 1,060 notes in two months. This is the earliest known redraw of the meme.
Spread
The thumbnail continued to inspired redraws over the following months, along with a similar screenshot showing several of astryuuna's thumbnails. For example, on December 3rd, 2024, X[4] user @raisutea posted a redraw depicting the YouTuber as Elma from Black Souls, garnering over 1,100 likes in a month.
On December 23rd, X[5] user @hourly_shitpost posted a screenshot of several of astryunna's thumbnails, garnering over 33,000 likes in a month. The post inspired numerous redraws in the quote-reposts. On January 6th, 2025, Redditor u/Grimm_Stereo posted a redraw of the astryuuna thumbnail collection to the /r/LimbusCompany[6] subreddit, garnering over 1,600 upvotes in three weeks.
On January 19th, Instagram[7] user aetheriarx posted a collection of YouTube thumbnail redraws, beginning with a version of the "mom found the yaoi" thumbnail, depicting the YouTuber as Tulpar from Mouthwashing, garnering over 120,000 likes in 10 days.
