Mom… I'm X / Is That Because Of Y? also known as Mom… I'm Gay / Is That Because You X? or Oh Yeah, Lemme Check If I Accidentally Bought the Fucking X That Makes You Gay, refers to an exploitable webcomic template in which a character wearing a green shirt says, "Mom… I'm gay," to their mother who's wearing a blue shirt. In the original comic, the mom responds, "Is that because you do weed?" The kid responds, "Oh yeah, lemme check if I accidentally bought the fucking weed that makes you gay." The kid checks his bag and says, "Oh fuck." The original comic was shared by Twitter / X user @ThisStupidTwink in September 2024. The four-panel template was recaptioned and reedited by meme creators on Reddit and elsewhere going into late 2024. Creators followed multiple phrasal templates, including, "Mom… I'm X / Is that because of Y," "Mom… I'm X / Is that because you Y," "Mom… I'm X / Is that because of that game you play?" and "Oh yeah, lemme check if I accidentally X the fucking Y that makes you Z," among others.

Origin

On September 3rd, 2024, X^[1] user @ThisStupidTwink tweeted a four-panel webcomic that showed a conversation between a kid and their mom. The kid (wearing a blue shirt) says, "Mom… I'm gay," to which the mom responds, "Is that because you do weed?" The kid responds, "Oh yeah, lemme check if I accidentally bought the fucking weed that makes you gay," and checks the bag that it came in which reads, "Weed that makes you gay." The kid says, "Oh fuck." The comic received over 269,000 likes in a week (shown below).

Spread

On September 3rd, 2024, X^[2] user @Maudeofmany replied to the original tweet, attaching an animation and voiceover of the comic. The video gained over 5,000 likes in a week (shown below).

In the following days, others exploited the original template by recaptioning the text to reference different subcultures and fandoms. For instance, on September 4th, X^[3] user @stereosupremacy edited the meme to reference the Dan and Phil tour, gaining over 2,800 likes in six days (shown below).

Other reedits quickly followed, like one shared by X^[4] user @sd_rin13 on September 7th, 2024, reading, "Mom… I'm trans / is that because of that game you play?" The video game in question was Guilty Gear. Over three days, the tweet amassed over 41,000 likes (shown below).

On September 8th, 2024, Redditor^[5] lylactal reposted the abovementioned meme to /r/Guiltygear where it received over 5,100 upvotes in two days.

Original iterations of the format also spread on Reddit, such as one shared by Redditor^[6] Reava_ to /r/VRchat on September 7th, concerning VRChat. The meme gained over 3,100 upvotes in three days (shown below).
