Ngh is an internet slang term and onomatopoeia used to represent a moan of pleasure. The exact origins of the term are unknown, with the earliest known example online being a 1998 The Parking Lot Is Full webcomic about a man who can ejaculate on command, although it the term may predate this. The term is often related to yaoi anime.

Origin

Although the origins and first known use of the term "ngh" to represent moaning are unknown, one of the earliest known examples online is a webcomic published by The Parking Lot Is Full in 1998 about a man who can ejaculate on command, saying "ngh" whenever he does. The comic was archived by Tumblr^[1] user imadudeyo in 2015 (shown below).

The term was defined on Urban Dictionary^[2] on August 24th, 2009 as "A sound made by fangirls when they see a super hot picture of someone they like," and again in 2014 as "a sound made from arousal and/or pleasure, the number of "n" and "h" varying depending on how much arousal and/or pleasure is being received."

Spread

Throughout the 2000s, the term "ngh" has increasingly been used to represent pleasureful and sexual moans. On April 26th, 2013, KnowYourMeme^[3] user Chrispy92 uploaded a Metal Gear Solid themed webcomic from 2008 using the term, garnering over 3,500 views in 10 years (shown below, left). On August 2nd, 2021, a Redditor posted a greentext story to /r/greentext^[4] using the term in this context, garnering over 1,400 upvotes in two years (shown below, right).

The term has continued to prove popular throughout the 2020s, including on TikTok. On July 9th, 2022, TikToker^[5] @your_personal_tshirt posted a video of Paul Breach using the term, garnering over 452,000 views in a year (shown below, left). On September 22nd, TikToker^[6] @lovsxi posted a video about not understanding what the term means, garnering over 400,000 views in 10 months (shown below, right).

On July 10th, TikToker^[6] @som3bod6 posted a meme captioned, "pov: you accidentally type 'ngh' instead of 'ngl,'" garnering over 2.2 million views in 11 days (shown below).
