About

Normie is a slang pejorative label for an individual who is deemed to be boringly conventional or mainstream by those who identify themselves as nonconformists. On 4chan's r9k (robot) board, it is often used to describe certain characters in greentext stories. Normies can be seen as the antithetic stereotype of hipsters and special snowflakes, both of which are derogatory terms for nonconformists.

Origin

Among the earliest known usages of the term was in the film The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, which was released on August 21st, 1987 (clip below).

One of the earliest written uses of the term comes from the book Treating the Alcoholic: A Developmental Model of Recovery by Stephanie Brown, where it is used to describe non-alcoholic individuals.[23] A derivative of the English adjective "normal," the term "normie" first came into colloquial usage in the context of mental health-related discussions sometime in the mid-to-late 1990s, with its earliest known mention dating back to April 1996 on the personal website of James L. Drush, an addiction recovery counselor, in a web page[1] that explains the common characteristics of a "normie."

This was me most of my life, being 'normal': 1. Normies love to help others 2. Normies have difficulty asking for what they need or want. 3. Normies suffer accumulated pain 4. Normies thrive on crises 5. Normies have difficulty experiencing and talking about their feelings, especially anger. 6. Normies are often alcoholics or drug addicted. 7. Normies have difficulty being assertive. 8. Normies feel they are not O.K 9. Normies don't trust people. 10. Normies either adapt readily with people, places and things, or else try to rigidly control them 11. Normies have trouble being direct. 12. Normies are extremely sensitive to criticism 13. Normies have trouble managing money. 14. Normies either procrastinate or are rigidly punctual 15. Normies frequently see life through extremes, all good or all bad 16. Normies frequently have been abused physically, emotionally, spiritually, and /or sexually. 17. Normies are impulsive. 18. Normies are extremely loyal, even in the face of evidence that the loyalty is undeserved. 19. Normies are either super-responsible or super-irresponsible. 20. Normies feel that they are different from other people. 21. Normies constantly seek approval and affirmation 22. Normies over-react to changes over which they have no control. 23. Normies take themselves very seriously. 24. Normies have difficulty with intimate relationships. 25. Normies judge themselves without mercy. 26. Normies lie when it is just as easy to tell the truth, 27. Normies have difficulty in following a project through from beginning to end 28. Normies GUESS AT WHAT IS NORMAL

The earliest known Urban Dictionary entry[1] that addresses the pejorative use of the word was submitted on February 15th, 2004, defining "normy" as "someone who is normal, bland."

Spread

Through the latter half of the 2000s, more than a dozen of additional entries for the term surfaced on the site[5], with the majority of definitions placing a common emphasis on the unremarkable nature of the individual or group it is addressed to. On February 23rd, 2008, an anonymous poster used the term "normie" to describe the sudden and drastic growth of otaku in replying to a discussion thread about Tokyo's cosplay hub Akihabara district on 4chan's /jp/ (otaku)[2] board.

Anonymous Sun 24 Feb 2008 08:18:47 No.58662 Report I figure Akihabara is kind of like youtube, or the internet in general. In movies, the internet was something that only the computer nerd used, and now it's something that teens use and they So great, and people on TV just so casually keep blogs. but I don't know anything about it other than that otaku took it over and now with things like live action series based on anime and moe mascots for anything, more and more "normies" are gaining interest and s------- it up.

On May 10th, 2009, DeviantART user TheAnimeGeek uploaded a demotivational poster based on a photograph of a woman in a business suit surrounded by anime cosplayers with the caption "NORMIES."

IM HERE ON BUSINESS NORMIES They're more scared of us then we are of them.

In June 2012, "normies" appeared for the first time on 4chan's /r9k/ board (shown below).[3] In the following years, the use of the term became increasingly frequent on the site, particularly in the context of greentext stories.
